WICHITA FALLS, Texas – Midwestern State is hosting the ITA Men's Division II South Central Regional Championships this week. Matches will be played at the MSU Tennis Center and Hamilton Park Tennis Center. The Mustangs have nine players entered in the singles draw, and four pairings competing in doubles.
Bruno Sanchez, a junior from Spain, is the No. 5 seed and one of three Mustangs seeded in the 64-player singles draw. Senior
Germano Setti from Brazil is the No. 9 seed, and senior Colombian
Juan David Duque is the No. 12 seed.
Sanchez, who finished last season No. 29 in the ITA Collegiate Tennis Rankings, faces Trevor Short of UT Tyler in the first round on Thursday.
Setti, a two-time All-Lone Star Conference performer, meets Job Japelj of UT Tyler in the opening round.
Duque, who was No. 40 in the ITA Collegiate Tennis Rankings at the end of last season, opens against Edward Shteyn of UT Dallas.
Duque and Sanchez are the No. 7 seed in the doubles draw and face Mael Houee and Yannik Rogulski of Western New Mexico on Thursday afternoon.
Caden Coker, a freshman from Burkburnett, Texas, also meets a Comet in his first-round match as he tangles with Jose Castillo. The winner of that match is likely to face top-seeded Kelly Giese of Lubbock Christian in the second round.
Tomas Luguizamon, a freshman from Colombia, takes on No. 6-seed Noe Milliard from Cameron. Milliard, a sophomore, defeated Sanchez during a dual match last spring, prevailing at No. 2 singles 7-5, 7-6 (4).
Matthew Earle, a 6-2 graduate student and a transfer from Washburn, faces Nehal Naidoo of UT Permian Basin in the opening round. Earle won the ITA Cup National Championship last year and was named an ITA Doubles All-American along with his partner Tim Hammes.
Earle and Setti are the No. 4 seed in this year's doubles and face Shteyn and Juan Luis Aguirre of UT Dallas in the opening round.
Jose Marquez, a senior from Mexico, meets Santiago Ledesma of Cameron in the first round of singles and will pair with Luguizamon in doubles. The duo squares off with Jose Perez Castillo and Benjamin Dubois of UT Dallas.
Marquez and Luguizamon would face the top-seeded tandem of Carel Wessel and Daniil Felker from UT Tyler in the second round with a victory over Castillo and Dubois.
Jack Franklin, a freshman from Edmond, Oklahoma, drew No. 16-seed Lukas Janousek of Cameron for his first-round match. Janousek was 3-1 at No. 5 singles for the Aggies last spring with his only loss coming against
Killian Guillou of MSU, 4-6, 2-6.
Rowan Olsen, a redshirt sophomore from San Antonio, plays freshman Lukas Holub from Cameron in his opening round match.
Franklin and Olsen will play doubles for the Mustangs and battle the fifth-seeded pairing of Geise and Pablo Segura in the first round.
The action gets underway at 8 a.m. on Thursday morning with singles. Doubles will commence on Thursday afternoon. The tournament runs through Saturday afternoon.
The winners earn automatic berths into the ITA Cup later this month in Rome, Georgia.
