Mustangs fall 56-54 at Eastern New Mexico on buzzer-beater

PORTALES, NM --Midwestern State fell to Eastern New Mexico 56-54 Sunday on Ishuana Hunter's buzzer-beating shot as time expired Sunday afternoon at Greyhound Arena.

The Mustangs (4-9, 2-5 in Lone Star Conference play) had two players score in double figures, led by Zarria Carter, who had 19 points, six rebounds and six steals. Kerbie Cash added her fourth double-double of the season with 17 points and 10 rebounds. Emillia Steele filled out the stat sheet with six points, eight rebounds and seven steals.

Hunter, a 6-foot senior forward, paced the Greyhounds with 15 points off of the bench, while senior guard Jayla Smith completed her second double-double of the campaign with 14 points and 14 rebounds.

Midwestern State takes on Western New Mexico Thursday night at D.L. Ligon Coliseum. Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m.

Eastern New Mexico improved to 11-2 on the season, and moved to 6-1 in league play.

How It Happened

Midwestern State and Eastern New Mexico exchanged the lead 15 times and the game was tied on seven occasions.

Freshman Kerbie Cash muscled her way to convert a layup in traffic to give the Mustangs their last of the game at 54-53 with 36 seconds to play.

ENMU senior Ishuana Hunter connected on one of two free throws to tie the game at 54-54 with 26 seconds to play.

The Mustangs managed to get off a 3-pointer from the top of the key that was tipped out of bounds, giving Eastern New Mexico a final possession with 0.5 seconds to play.

The Greyhounds advanced the ball with a timeout and Tatiana Platonova found Hunter on a lob under the basket for the game winning buzzer beater.

Midwestern State forced the 'Hounds into eight turnovers in the opening period to jump out to a 19-8 lead, but ENMU narrowed the deficit 24-23 at halftime.
