Carter has double-double in Midwestern State's 82-44 win against Western New Mexico

WICHITA FALLS, TX --Zarria Carter secured her ninth double-double with 26 points and 14 rebounds to help Midwestern State rout Western New Mexico, 82-44, at D.L. Ligon Coliseum on Thursday night.

In addition to Carter's solid outing, the Mustangs (5-9, 3-5) were led by Kerbie Cash, who had 15 points and nine rebounds, and by Emillia Steele, who added 13 points.

Carter pulled down seven of the 17 offensive rebounds that led to 19 second chance points for Midwestern State.

Midwestern State's defense held Western New Mexico to 23.7 percent shooting from the field, and the Western Mustangs were 0-for-10 from beyond the arc.

How It Happened

Midwestern State started out the scoring by going on an 11-0 run, culminating in a bucket from Calyssa Sevier, to take an early lead with 4:39 left in the first quarter. The Mustangs then added eight points to that lead by the end of the period and entered the quarter break with a 23-4 advantage. Midwestern State capitalized on eight Western New Mexico turnovers in the period, turning them into 10 points on the other end of the floor.

Midwestern State built that first quarter lead to 38-15 before going on a 6-0 run starting at the 1:08 mark in the second period to increase its lead to 44-15, a score that would hold until halftime. Midwestern State forced seven Western New Mexico turnovers in the period and turned them into 10 points.

After intermission, Midwestern State added to its advantage and owned a 66-25 lead heading into the fourth quarter. Midwestern State played well near the basket, scoring 14 of its 22 points in the paint.

The Mustangs then held on for the victory in the fourth quarter. Midwestern State took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring eight of its 16 points in the paint.
