Midwestern State falls 70-69 to Eastern New Mexico on buzzer-beater

WICHITA FALLS, TX --Abbi Holder stole an inbounds pass in the waning moments of the fourth quarter and scored the game-winning layup with two seconds remaining as Eastern New Mexico defeated Midwestern State, 70-69.

The Mustangs (9-11, 7-7) had two players score in double figures, led by Kerbie Cash, who secured her eighth double-double of the season with 29 points and 11 rebounds. Zarria Carter added 22 points and eight rebounds, while Alyssa Hutterer finished with six points and two steals for the Mustangs.

Midwestern State outrebounded Eastern New Mexico, 45-40. The Mustangs grabbed 20 offensive rebounds and scored 23 second-chance points.

Midwestern State forced 18 Eastern New Mexico turnovers and scored 23 points off those turnovers.

How It Happened

After jumping out to a 5-4 advantage, Midwestern State went on a 5-0 run with 6:14 left in the first quarter to increase its lead to 10-4. The Greyhounds came back and took an 18-14 lead into the second quarter.

Eastern New Mexico outscored the Mustangs in the second quarter, 18-12, to take a 36-26 lead at halftime. 

After intermission, Midwestern State cut its deficit to 40-34 before going on a 6-0 run to tie things up at 40 with 4:00 to go in the third. The Mustangs could not advance their rally further as the Greyhounds took a 48-46 lead into the fourth quarter. Midwestern State scored 14 of its 20 third-quarter points in the paint.

Eastern New Mexico kept widening its lead in the fourth, constructing a 53-48 advantage before Midwestern State went on an 11-0 run, finished off by Cash's layup, to seize a 59-53 lead with 6:05 to go in the contest. Eastern New Mexico re-asserted control, outscoring the Mustangs 17-10 the rest of the way to hand Midwestern State a 70-69 defeat.

» Kerbie Cash is second in the Lone Star Conference with eight double-doubles. Zarria Carter leads the league with 14.
» Eastern New Mexico swept the season series, winning both games in the final seconds, outscoring Midwestern State by three points in two games combined.
