WICHITA FALLS, TX -- Midwestern State trailed by nine points with 9:34 remaining in the game but rallied to defeat West Texas A&M on Saturday afternoon at D.L. Ligon Coliseum, 69-67. Midwestern State improved its record to 10-11 overall and 8-7 in the Lone Star Conference.
Senior forward Zarria Carter scored 12 of her 22 points in the fourth quarter, hitting 4-of-4 shots from the field in the final period and going 4-of-4 from the free-throw line. Kerbie Cash was 4-of-4 from the field in the first quarter and scored eight of her 22 points in the opening period. Calyssa Sevier, who played 40 minutes, finished with a season-high 18 points on 6-of-12 shooting, including 4-of-7 from 3-point range.
Midwestern State forced 15 turnovers and scored 14 points off of those turnovers.Sevier and Carissa Cortez each had two steals for the Mustangs.
How It Happened
After falling behind 8-4, Midwestern State went on a 7-0 run with 6:25 left in the first quarter, culminating in a 3-pointer from Sevier, to take an 11-8 lead. The Mustangs then added two points to that lead by the end of the period and entered the quarter break with a 19-14 advantage. Midwestern State did most of its first quarter damage in the paint, scoring 10 of its 19 points close to the basket.
The Mustangs could not maintain their lead in the second quarter and entered halftime trailing 31-29.
Midwestern State's deficit continued to grow after halftime, and the Mustangs faced a 52-45 disadvantage heading to the fourth quarter. Midwestern State played well near the basket, scoring 10 of its 16 points in the paint.
Midwestern State narrowed its deficit to 59-53 before going on a 7-0 run to seize a 60-59 lead with 3:51 to go in the contest. Midwestern State took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring 12 of its 24 points in the paint.
