Carter leads Mustangs to 69-66 win over Oklahoma Christian

WICHITA FALLS, TX --Zarria Carter recorded her 14th double-double of the season, scoring 28 points and grabbing 14 rebounds as Midwestern State won its third straight game and defeated Oklahoma Christian on Saturday afternoon at D.L. Ligon Coliseum, 69-66.

Midwestern State has won five of its last six games and moved to 7-6 in conference play with a 9-10 overall record. The Mustangs extended their home winning streak to seven games and they are 8-2 as the host this season.

Kerbie Cash finished with 11 points, six rebounds and four assists in the victory. Trinidi King came off the bench and scored six points while grabbing six rebounds for the Mustangs.

Midwestern State outrebounded Oklahoma Christian, 40-31, and turned 12 offensive rebounds into 17 second chance points.

The Midwestern State defense held Oklahoma Christian shooters to only 39.2 percent from the field, including 12.5 percent from three-point range. The Eagles did not get many second opportunities on the offensive end, as they grabbed only seven offensive rebounds and scored six second chance points while Midwestern State pulled down 28 defensive rebounds.

How It Happened

After jumping out to a 14-12 advantage, Midwestern State went on a 6-0 run with 1:13 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from Carter, to increase its lead to 20-12, a score that would hold for the rest of the period. Midwestern State did most of its first quarter damage in the paint, scoring 12 of its 20 points close to the basket.

Midwestern State kept its first quarter lead intact before going on a 5-0 run starting at the 4:24 mark in the second period to increase its lead to 27-21. The Mustangs proceeded to tack on two points to that lead and enjoyed a 39-31 advantage heading into halftime. Midwestern State dominated in the paint, scoring 12 of its 19 points close to the basket.

After intermission, Midwestern State held on to its advantage and owned a 52-51 lead heading into the fourth quarter. Midwestern State played well near the basket, scoring 10 of its 13 points in the paint.

Oklahoma Christian proceeded to take a 55-52 lead before Midwestern State went on a 6-0 run, finished off by Emillia Steele's layup, to seize a 58-55 lead with 6:40 to go in the contest. The Mustangs held onto that lead for the rest of the game for the 69-66 win.
