Carter and Cash have double-doubles in Midwestern State's 80-60 win over Sul Ross State

WICHITA FALLS, TX --Zarria Carter and Kerbie Cash each recorded double-doubles to help lead Midwestern State past Sul Ross State at D.L. Ligon Coliseum on Saturday afternoon, 80-60.

The Mustangs (6-9, 4-5) had three players score in double figures, led by Carter, who scored a career-high 37 points and grabbed 16 rebounds. Alyssa Hutterer came off the bench and scored 13 points on 5-of-9 shooting, and she hit 3 of 6 from 3-point range.  Cash finished with 10 points,10 rebounds, six assists and six steals for the Mustangs, who scored 27 points off 21 turnovers.

Midwestern State's defense held Sul Ross State to only 36.7 percent shooting from the field, including 21.4 percent from beyond the arc. 

How It Happened

After jumping out to a 14-10 advantage, Midwestern State went on a 12-0 run with 4:22 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from Cash, to increase its lead to 26-10. The Mustangs then lost some of that lead, but still entered the quarter break with a 28-14 advantage. Midwestern State did most of its first quarter damage in the paint, scoring 14 of its 28 points close to the basket.

Midwestern State kept its first quarter lead intact before going on a 6-0 run starting at the 9:45 mark in the second period, highlighted by a bucket from Emillia Steele, to increase its lead to 34-14. The Lobos cut into that lead, but the Mustangs still enjoyed a 47-29 advantage heading into halftime. Midwestern State continued to dominate inside, scoring 16 of its 19 points in the paint.

Midwestern State went on an 11-0 run  in the third quarter to expand its lead further to 63-43 with 21 seconds to go in the third. 

The Mustangs then held on for the victory in the fourth quarter. Midwestern State took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring 12 of its 17 fourth-quarter points in the paint.
