ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. -- Sofia Giraldo clinched the first-ever national semifinal berth for Midwestern State with a 6-3, 6-7 (4), 6-4 victory over Fernanda Castillo as the No. 5-seeded Mustangs defeated No. 4-seeded Wingate, 4-3, in the national quarterfinals at Salando Park on Tuesday night.
Midwestern State faces top-seeded Barry on Thursday morning.
Giraldo also clinched the 4-1 victory over Dallas Baptist in the South Central Regional at MSU Tennis Center on May 10 with a 7-5, 7-6 (9-7) win over Isabella Rios. The freshman from Colombia improved her record to 13-7 with 11 wins coming in the No. 4 position.
Midwestern State dropped the doubles point but won the first three completed singles matches to take the lead over the Bulldogs, who rallied with wins at No. 1 and No. 6 singles.
Annika Hakovirta won a three-set decision over
Sydney Williams, 6-7 (2), 6-3, 7-5, at No. 6 singles, and No. 43-ranked Eva Siska pulled away from No. 14-ranked
Jessica Binzari, 6-4, 5-7, 6-1, to knot the dual match, 3-3.
Williams fell to 12-3 for the season and lost a match after winning the first set for the first time this season. Siska snapped Binzari's nine-match winning streak, and the Mustangs top-ranked singles player fell to 14-9 for the season.
Hannah Yip, who is ranked No. 41 in the nation, won her 13th consecutive singles match and kept the Mustangs undefeated at No. 3 singles this season with a comprehensive 6-2, 6-0 victory over Suzuka Sambyakugari. The junior from Malaysia has won 15 matches in straight sets this year. MSU is 24-0 this season at No. 3 singles with
Anda Ghinga earning 10 of those wins.
Ghinga, ranked No. 31 in the nation, improved to 13-2 at No. 2 singles with an impressive 6-0, 6-2 victory over No. 35-ranked Chloe Ksomrlj. The junior from Romania has won 10 of her last 11 matches and is 23-2 for the Mustangs this season. Ghinga dropped four or fewer games in a singles match for the 14th time this season.
Skylar Minns, a senior from Port Aransas, Texas, won 6-4, 6-4 over Claudia Vallejos at No. 5 singles in a match that lasted one hour and 41 minutes. Minns won her third consecutive completed match for the Mustangs and improved to 15-7 for the season.
Sarah Mazaraki and Williams gave the Mustangs an early advantage in doubles with a 6-2 win over Mariia Bobrovska and Hakovirta at No. 3 doubles. The duo improved to 8-2 this season after going 5-0 in conference play.
But the Mustangs were unable to win the doubles point.
Kosmrlj and Danila Kotara won a tiebreak at No. 2 doubles for Wingate, defeating Giraldo and Yip, 7-6 (3).
Sambyakugari and Siska upended the 21st-ranked pairing of  Binzari and  Ghinga at No. 1 doubles, 6-3, to clinch the first point of the dual for the Bulldogs. The Romanian duo saw a five-match winning streak in doubles snapped.
