MIDLAND, Texas -- No. 23-ranked Midwestern State won its fifth consecutive dual match and in the process snapped 27th-ranked UT Permian Basin's six-dual winning streak, handing the Falcons their first defeat in the Lone Star Conference. The Mustangs improved to 9-7 overall and 4-0 in conference play with a 4-3 victory at the Bush Tennis Center on Saturday afternoon.
UT Permian Basin is 17-4 overall with a 6-1 record against LSC opponents. The Falcons lost at home for the first time in eight dual matches.
After winning the doubles point, MSU was on the winning side of the first three singles matches that were completed to clinch the victory.
Juan Duque, making his second straight appearance in the lineup, clinched the victory for Midwestern State with a 6-2, 1-6, 6-3 triumph over Grzegorz Rudnicki at No. 5 singles. The Colombian improved to 2-1 for the season with both victories coming on this road trip. Duque defeated Mohjit Grewal at Western New Mexico on Friday, 6-1, 6-4.
The Mustangs took the lead as No. 5-ranked
Luis Diaz Argente and
Stephen Slocombe won their third doubles match in four outings, defeating Rudnicki and Jonas Krahofer at No. 1 doubles, 6-1.
Killian Guillou and
Germano Setti clinched the doubles point with a 6-4 win over Vitaliy Horovoy and Jonathan Vega. Guillou and Setti have won their last four doubles matches in the No. 2 spot and improved to 8-6 for the season.
Bruno Sanchez and Justin Amerongen had a three-match winning streak snapped in doubles as Takumi Katsuda and Jonas Krahofer preveailed in a tiebreak, 7-6 (4). Sanchez and Amerongen fell to 5-4 at No. 3 doubles for the Mustangs.
Setti, ranked No. 55 in the nation, won his fifth consecutive match at No. 2 singles. The sophomore from Brail from Brazil posted a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Takumi Katsuda. Setti improved to 6-2 in the No. 2 singles slot.
Charles Heffernan made his season debut for the Mustangs and knocked off Lucas Nitschke at No. 6 singles, 6-1, 6-4. Heffernan, a senior from Australia, made his first dual-match appearance in almost a year.
Stephen Slocombe saw a five-match winning streak end with a 3-6, 6-2, 3-6 loss to Jonathan Vega at No. 3 singles. The junior from Barbados fell to 3-1 against LSC opponents and is 8-6 overall this season.
Diaz had a four-match winning streak snapped at No. 1 singles as No. 16-ranked Horovoy outlasted the 43rd-ranked Spaniard, 4-6, 7-5, 7-5. Diaz is 3-1 in conference matches for the Mustangs.
Philip Kamara lost two close tiebreaks at No. 4 singles and fell to Jonas Krahofer, 6-7 (5), 6-2, 6-7 (10), ending a three-match winning streak. Kamara is 8-5 overall and suffered his second loss in the No. 4 spot.
Midwestern State returns to MSU Tennis Center on Friday to face Dallas Baptist at 2 p.m.
