MSU sweeps Dallas Baptist, stays atop LSC standings

WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- One day before a critical dual match with UT Tyler, No. 18-ranked Midwestern State took care of business at MSU Tennis Center with a 7-0 victory over Dallas Baptist on Friday afternoon.

Midwestern State has a six-dual winning streak and improved to 10-7 overall with a 5-0 record in the Lone Star Conference. On Saturday, the Mustangs face No. 19 UT Tyler, which is 15-4 overall and 5-1 in the LSC.

The Mustangs did not drop a set in their dual with Dallas Baptist.

Midwestern State swept through doubles, led by the No. 4-ranked tandem of Luis Diaz Argente and Stephen Slocombe, who crushed Arturo Langle and Trevor Vaccaro, 6-1. Germano Setti and Killian Guillou scored a routine 6-4 victory over Ricardo Carvajalino and Fabian Rosales at No. 2 doubles, while Justin Van Amerongen and Bruno Sanchez won a 7-5 decision over Joshua Capone and Will Fiala at No. 3 doubles.

Setti, the reigning Lone Star Conference Player of the Week, waltzed to a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Carvajalino at No. 2 singles.

"Germano Setti was solid from beginning to end," head coach Scott Linn said. "In doubles he was locked in. In singles he was locked in. Cheering on his teammates, he was locked in. He's doing it all."

Diaz claimed the point at No. 1 singles with a 6-1, 6-3 triumph over Langle. Diaz, who is ranked No. 45 in the nation, has won five of his last six singles matches.

Stephen Slocombe clinched the dual in style as he charged the net and put away an emphatic volley to end a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Rosales at No. 3 singles. Slocombe has won six of his last seven completed singles matches.

"Stephen is growing," Linn said. "This has been a jump this year for him. He's done a really good job accepting that responsibility."

Charles Heffernan has not dropped a set in his first two dual-match appearances of the season. The senior from Australia disposed of Artur Beitman, 6-3, 6-1, at No. 5 singles.

Philip Kamara won for the fourth time in five matches with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Alec Rule at No. 4 singles.

"Philip was really good in the second set," Linn said. "I felt like he took to coaching really well and grabbed a hold of it, which was great to see."

Juan David Duque won his third consecutive singles match, defeating Zach Capone at No. 6 singles, 6-4, 6-4.

UT Tyler will renew its rivalry with the Mustangs at 2 p.m. on Saturday as the two teams clash at MSU Tennis Center. Midwestern State is 3-0 when hosting the Patriots and leads the all-time series, 6-5. UT Tyler has won four of the last five meetings.

"It's a fun match. They're a tough team. We're going to have to be ready to fight for every single point. We got to clear our minds of this and make some adjustments." Linn said after the Mustangs sweep of DBU.

Dallas Baptist lost its fifth-straight dual match and fell to 14-11 overall. The Patriots are 0-6 in the Lone Star Conference.
