MSU whips Western New Mexico, 7-0

SILVER CITY, N.M. -- No. 23-ranked Midwestern State won its fourth consecutive dual match and improved to 3-0 in the Lone Star Conference with a 7-0 victory at the Western New Mexico Tennis Courts on Friday afternoon.

The MSU Mustangs are 8-7 overall this season and dropped Western New Mexico to 5-14 with a 1-5 conference record.

Midwestern State won the doubles point in a little more than a half hour, and Luis Diaz Argente clinched the dual match with a 7-6 (5), 6-2 win over Javier Romero in a mere 94 minutes.

Diaz, a senior from Spain, has reeled off four straight wins at No.1 singles, including three conference victories. The No. 43-ranked singles player in NCAA Division II is 7-5 overall with four wins in seven appearances at No. 1 singles.

Germano Setti, a sophomore from Brazil, earned his fourth straight win for the Mustangs with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Romaine Malhomme. The No. 55-ranked player in the nation improved to 5-2 at No. 2 singles. Setti is 3-0 in conference matches.

Sophomore Juan David Duque made his second appearance at No. 6 singles and dismissed Mohjit Grewal, 6-1, 6-4. The Colombian saw his first action since losing a third-set tiebreak to Moritz Stenzer at Flagler on March 13.

Philip Kamara, a sophomore from Romania, improved to 8-4 this season and remained undefeated in three conference matches with a 6-4, 6-2 triumph over Lorenzo Orellano at No. 5 singles.

Stephen Slocombe rolled to a fourth consecutive win and improved to 6-3 at No. 4 singles with a 7-5, 6-4 win over Alexandre Frigout. The junior from Barbados is 3-0 against LSC opponents.

Killian Guillou ended a five-match skid with a three-set win over Brendan Lock at No. 4 singles. The sophomore from France had lost his last four matches that were extended to three sets but improved to 1-2 in the LSC with a 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 victory to complete the sweep for MSU.

Diaz and Slocombe, the No. 5-ranked doubles team in the nation, breezed past Frigout and Lock at No. 1 doubles, 6-1. The tandem has faced four ranked opponents this season and improved its record to 8-4.

Setti and Guillou secured the first dual-match point of the day with a 6-2 win over Orellano and Romero at No. 2 doubles. Setti and Guillou have won three straight doubles matches against conference foes and are 7-6 for the season.

Bruno Sanchez and Justin Van Amerongen improved to 3-0 in conference matches, defeating Grewal and Malhomme, 6-4. Sanchez and Van Amerongen are 5-3 at No. 3 doubles this season.

Midwestern State completes the road trip at the Bush Tennis Center in Midland, Texas, and plays UT Permian Basin in a dual match at noon on Saturday.
