WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- Midwestern State is 3-2 at the start of the season, including a win over then No. 3-ranked West Alabama at the UT Tyler Invitational last weekend, and the Mustangs are No. 13 in the ITA Division II Collegiate Tennis Rankings released on Wednesday.
The Mustangs started the season by winning three straight dual matches, including a 4-3 win over visiting Findlay (Ohio), which is No. 22 in the latest rankings. Junior
Hannah Yip fended off four match points to force a decisive third set and prevailed, 4-6, 7-6 (6), 6-1, to pull even with the Oilers. Junior
Micaela McSpadden clinched the victory at No. 5 singles with a 6-7 (6), 6-4, 6-4 victory.
Midwestern State opened the UT Tyler Invitational by upending West Alabama, 4-2.
Skylar Minns clinched the win for the Mustangs with a 6-3, 7-6 (3) triumph at No. 5 singles over Greta Zowles.
Lubbock Christian is the highest-ranked team in the Lone Star Conference with an 8-0 record. The Lady Chaps are No. 7 and will visit MSU Tennis Center for the conference opener on March 20.
Angelo State is ranked just ahead of the Mustangs at No. 12 with a 6-1 record, and Cameron is ranked No. 18 with a 2-1 record. The Aggies are playing three matches in Wichita Falls this weekend against Washburn, McKendree and Nebraska-Kearney. Cameron hosts the Mustangs in the LSC finale on April 20.
The Stang Gang is hosting No. 26-ranked Nebraska-Kearney, No. 5-ranked Washburn and McKendree in a three-day span at MSU Tennis Center. MSU faces UNK on Friday at 2 p.m. Washburn battles the Mustangs on Saturday at 2 p.m., and McKendree tangles with Midwestern State on Sunday at 1 p.m.
