WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- Midwestern State has won its last three dual matches and moved up seven spots to No. 18 in the ITA NCAA Division II Collegiate Tennis Rankings released on Wednesday.
The Mustangs are 7-7 for the season, but all seven losses have come to nationally ranked opponents, including four in the top-10 of the latest rankings.
Midwestern State has posted victories over No. 22-ranked Auburn Montgomery, No. 23 Hawaii Pacific and No. 33 Lubbock Christian.
The seven losses have come against No. 3-ranked Flagler, No. 4-ranked Rollins, No. 6-ranked Washburn, No. 9-ranked West Florida, No. 12-ranked McKendree, No. 14-ranked Embry-Riddle, and No. 21-ranked Ouachita Baptist.
The Stangs, who are 2-0 against LSC opponents, resume dual-match play at Western New Mexico on April 5.
Luis Diaz Argente has won his last three singles matches and is ranked No. 37 among NCAA Division II singles players. Diaz, who is 6-5 in dual matches this season, defeated No. 19-ranked Sebastian Pjontek of Washburn earlier this month, 4-6, 7-6 (8), 6-2, and No. 64 Robin Sanz of Hawaii Pacific, 6-7 (4-7), 6-4, 7-6 (7-4). One of his losses came against No. 10-ranked Jacopo Denitto of Flagler.
Germano Setti, who has a three-match winning streak, is No. 58 in the singles rankings. Setti defeated No. 44-ranked Martins Abamu of Lubbock Christian, 6-4, 3-6, 6-2, in the conference opener on March 20. The sophomore from Brazil has faced seven ranked opponents this season, including No. 7-ranked Baptiste Mercier of Flagler. Setti has posted a 6-8 record for MSU this season and has played No. 1 singles in eight dual matches.
Diaz and
Stephen Slocombe are the No. 7-ranked doubles pairing in NCAA Division II. The duo is 7-4 at No. 1 doubles for MSU this season with a 2-2 record against nationally ranked tandems, including a 6-2 win over No. 3-ranked Fernando Docters and Ramon Strassmann of Ouachita Baptist.
