Mustangs lose dual match at Embry-Riddle, 4-3

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- Midwestern State began its Spring Break road trip by earning the doubles point, but Embry-Riddle won four of the six singles matches to defeat the Mustangs, 4-3, at Crotty Tennis Complex on Tuesday afternoon.

The first three completed singles matches saw the Eagles come out on top.

Safar Rasulov of Embry-Riddle needed less than 90 minutes to defeat Luis Diaz Argente at No. 1 singles, 6-2, 6-1.

Philip Kamara lost in straight sets for the first time this season and fell to 5-2 for the season with a 3-6, 2-6 loss to Calean Potts at No. 5 singles. The sophomore from Romania is 3-2 in the No. 5 position for the Mustangs.

Killian Guillou won the first set at No. 3 singles for MSU, but Michele Iftimie rallied to defeat the sophomore from Paris, France, 2-6, 7-5, 6-1. Guillou is 3-2 at No. 3 singles and 4-5 overall this season.

Stephen Slocombe kept the Mustangs in the dual and snapped a four-match losing streak with a 6-4, 5-7, 6-4 victory over Fernando Alonso at No. 4 singles. Slocombe is 4-3 in the No. 4 position and 4-5 overall in singles.

Germano Setti ended a three-match skid as he rallied for a 5-7, 6-3, 7-5 win over No. 25-ranked Joshua Nuyts at No. 2 singles. Setti is 1-1 in the No. 2 spot for MSU and improved to 3-6 for the season.

Alvaro Diaz Rodrigo clinched the match for the homestanding Eagles with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over freshman Bruno Sanchez, who is 1-2 at No. 6 singles for the Stang Gang.

No. 13-ranked Slocombe and Diaz secured the doubles point for the Mustangs with a 6-3 victory over Iftimie and Nuyts at No. 1 doubles. Slocombe and Diaz have won their last four doubles matches and improved to 6-1.

Justin Van Amerongen and Sanchez were the first to finish in doubles, defeating Diaz Rodrigo and Rasulov, 6-3. The pairing of the junior transfer from Blue Mountain College and the young Spaniard is 2-0 in dual matches for the Mustangs.

Midwestern State has lost its last four dual matches and fell to 4-5 for the season. The Eagles won their third consecutive dual, improving their home record to 6-2, and they are 7-2 for the season.

The Mustangs travel nearly 60 miles south to Winter Park, Florida, for a dual match against Rollins at 1 p.m. CDT on Wednesday.
