TYLER, Texas -- Midwestern State scored an impressive win over No. 23 West Alabama in its first of three dual matches against ranked opponents at the UT Tyler Invitational. The Mustangs tamed the Tigers at Brookshire Courts, 6-1, and improved to 3-1 this season with their resounding victory on Friday afternoon.
Luis Diaz Argente lost only two games in doubles and singles combined. Diaz teamed with
Stephen Slocombe to win No. 1 doubles over 20th-ranked Lucas Hammond and Eita Ishikawa, 6-1. The senior from Spain went on to capture No. 2 singles, 6-1, 6-0, over Wilson Igbinovia.
Germano Setti and
Killian Guillou clinched the doubles point with 6-1 triumph over Igbinovia and Vilislav Bonev at No. 2 doubles, and both Mustangs went on to win singles matches.
Setti earned his first win in four matches at No. 1 singles with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Lucas Hammond. Guillou also won in straight sets, defeating Ishikawa at No. 3 singles, 6-3, 6-3, and the sophomore from France improved to 3-1 this season.
Slocombe was pushed to three sets by Nutti Jokinen at No. 4 singles, but the junior from Barbados clinched the victory for the Mustangs with a 6-1, 3-6, 6-1 victory.
Philip Kamara remained undefeated with his fourth consecutive win for the Stang Gang. The sophomore from Romania outlasted Vilislav Bonev in a match tiebreak, 3-6, 6-3, 10-5. It was the second time this season that Kamara prevailed in a match tiebreak.
Jacob Tapia scored the only point in the dual match for the Tigers with a 6-4, 6-4 win at No. 6 singles over freshman
Bruno Sanchez, who won his collegiate debut for MSU at Southeastern Oklahoma last week.
Midwestern State faces another ranked opponent on Saturday as it tangles with Auburn-Montgomery, which is ranked No. 19 in the nation. The match is scheduled to begin at 2:30 p.m.
