TYLER, Texas -- Germano Setti defeated Joao Guariente for his second straight victory at No. 1 singles, and the Mustangs overcame dropping the doubles point to defeat No. 19-ranked Auburn-Montgomery at Summers Tennis Center on Saturday afternoon, 4-3.
Setti fell behind early as Guariente won the first set 6-2. The sophomore from Brazil won a lengthy second-set tiebreak, 12-10, before taking the third set, 7-5. Setti's victory drew MSU even in the dual match, 3-3.
Justin Van Amerongen also won a second-set tiebreak at No. 5 singles and defeated Agustin Marquez, 5-7, 7-6 (2), 6-2, to secure the dual-match victory for Midwestern State. The junior from the Netherlands is 2-1 in his first season with the Mustangs.
Sophomore
Philip Kamara remains undefeated after splitting sets, 5-7, 7-5. Alejandro Verdasco was disqualified for an unsportsmanlike act in the third set of their match at No. 4 singles. Kamara has opened the season with a 5-0 record for the Stang Gang.
Midwestern State was playing without
Luis Diaz Argente due to injury, and the Warhawks conceded No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles.
Setti and
Killian Guillou played Joao Guariente and Giuseppe Bonaiuti at No. 1 doubles, and the UAM paring prevailed, 6-3.
Alejandro Verdasco and Adrian Contreras defeatedÂ
Juan David Duque and
Marcal Miret Avante at No. 2 doubles, 6-4, securing the first point of the dual match for the Warhawks.
Stephen Slocombe was upended by Contreras in singles, 6-2, 6-0. The junior from Barbados was playing No. 3 singles for the first time this season after going 3-1 at No. 4 singles, including a three-set victory over Nutti Jokinen of No. 23-ranked West Alabama on Friday.
Guillou played No. 2 singles after back-to-back victories at No. 3 singles but lost to Giuseppe Bonaiuti, 5-7, 4-6.
Midwestern State closes out the UT Tyler Invitational on Sunday against No. 7-ranked West Florida. The match begins at 1:30 p.m.
