Lyons, Dangerfield lead Mustangs at LSC Indoor Championships

NORMAN, Oklahoma -- Midwestern State's Jaycee Lyons and Jadyn Dangerfield led a herd of eight Mustangs to score points in the Lone Star Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships Saturday at OU's Mosier Indoor Facility.

Altogether, MSU amassed 24 points to finish seventh in the 10-team at the championships.

Lyons totaled a team-high 6.5 points powered by a fifth-place finish in the 1-mile, while the Holliday High School graduate also logged an eighth-place finish in the 3,000-meter run. She also ran the 1,600-meter leg for the bronze medal finishing distance medley relay team.

Lyons clocked a personal best time of 5:07.03 in the mile, which stands as the program's fastest in an LSC Indoor Championship and ranks third on MSU's all-time performance chart. It was best mark since Bridget Reilly logged a 5:01.86 during the 2016 campaign.

Lyons capped off the meet by racing to another PR in the 3,000-meter run, placing eighth with a time of 10:29.27. It was the fastest time for a Mustang at an LSC Indoor Championship since Gabriela Ruiz finished fourth with a time of 10:26.52 in 2014.

Dangerfield totaled 5.5 points, fueled by a fifth-place finish in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:18.88. The Mesquite High School product also got the distance medley relay team off to a flying start by running 1,200-meter leg.

Junior Daiza Jones made history by finishing seventh in the 400-meter dash with a time of 56.74 becoming the first MSU sprinter in program history to qualify for the finals.

Jones also combined with Da'Shrana Sims, Nidhi Singh, and Jessie Heath to finish fifth in the 4x400-meter relay with a time of 3:54.30.

Senior Peyton Lewis improved her own program indoor record in the triple jump to 37 feet, 8 inches to finish ninth in the event.

FRIDAY REWIND

Midwestern State's Distance Medley Relay team of Jadyn Dangerfield (1,200 meters), Da'Shrana Sims (400 meters), Jessie Heath (800 meters), and Jaycee Lyons (1,600 meters) turned in the third fastest time in program history with a 12:20.28 on the way to winning a bronze medal.

The time was the fastest since Cristina Alcantar, C.J. Frizzell, Ana Lopez, and Ashley Flores won the event in 2014 at 12:06.75 and its the seventh time that MSU has medaled in the event. The mark is also the program's fastest since 2016.

But the quartet wasn't the first to earn points for the Mustangs.

Senior Alexandra Feller and sophomore Ella Pando placed seventh and eighth in the 5,000-meter run with times of 18:09.74 and 18:30.79, respectively.

Feller's mark is the third fastest for an MSU runner at the LSC Indoor Championships, just behind Gabriela Ruiz's 18:00.76 in 2024 and Amerhyst Aguirre's 18:08.26 in 2020. Both Ruiz and Aguirre were silver medalists.

Junior Daiza Jones set a school record and became the first MSU sprinter to qualify for the 400-meter finals with a time of 56.44, while Dangerfield qualified for her first indoor final with a 2:17.96 in the 800-meter run.

Jones' time is an NCAA Division II provisional qualifying mark and would have ranked 49th on the Division II performance chart heading into the weekend.

Dangerfield's mark is the second fastest for an MSU student-athlete at the 800-meter distance and just behind Ana Lopez, who won a bronze medal with a time of 2:1532 in 2014.

Junior Delaini Hanna improved her indoor mark by 8 inches to take ninth in the pole vault with a clearance of 10 feet and 8 inches.

Senior Peyton Lewis delivered her best long jump mark at an LSC Indoor Championships, leaping 17 feet and 6 inches to finish 15th.
