Lyons leads Midwestern State's strong effort at Jarvis Scott Open

LUBBOCK, Texas -- Midwestern State student-athletes placed 15 marks on the program's all-time performance charts and set 14 personal bests Saturday in Texas Tech's Jarvis Scott Open at the Sports Performance Center.

Once again, Jaycee Lyons stood out for the Mustangs, setting a school record, while setting top times in the mile and 3,000-meter runs.

The freshman from Holliday raced to a seventh-place finish and topped MSU's all-time performance chart in the 1,000-meter run with a time of 3:00.59. With the performance, she eclipsed an 11-year-old mark of 3:01.60 set by Ashley Flores in 2013.

Sophomore Jadyn Dangerfield (3:06.75/fourth) and junior Arianna Carballeira (3:08.34/sixth) also crashed the performance list by placing 12th and 13th, respectively.

Lyons improved to fourth on MSU's all-time list in the mile by taking 10th with a time of 5:11.68, while also claiming 10th in the 3,000-meter run with a time of 10:39.71, which ranked ninth in program history.

Midwestern State's 4x400-meter relay squad of Daiza Jones, Dangerfield, Da'Shrana Sims, and Jessie Heath finished 16th in an extremely competitive field. Their time of 3:52.82 was good enough for 16th in the meet, but is the 43rd fastest in NCAA Division II this season.

Angelo State set an NCAA Division II record in the event with a time of 3:36.14, to beat Arizona and TCU to the tape.

The relay was icing on the cake for Jones, who also turned in the second-fastest 400-meter time in school history with a 57.25.

Junior sprinter Corinne Thorpe placed a pair of marks on the program's all-time performance list. The Grand Prairie native ran the third fastest time in MSU history in the 60-meter dash (7.76) and turned in the sixth fasted mark in the 200-meter dash (25.73).

Sims also boasted two all-time performances, racing to MSU's fourth fasted mark in the 400-meter dash (58.89) and the seventh quickest time in the 200-meter dash at 25.73.

Sophomore Trell'Kyrah Watkins placed 16th in the 600-yard run with a time of 1:29.76, while Carballeira was 13th in the 1,000-meter run with a time of 3:08.34. Both marks ranked sixth-best in program history in the respective event.

Heath, a freshman from Azle, enjoyed a stellar meet as she ran the seventh fast time in program history in the 400-meter dash (59.41), while sophomore Rylee Gattenby turned in the fourth-best time in program history in the 60-meter hurdles at 9.92.

Midwestern State competes in the Lone Star Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships on February 23-24 at Oklahoma's Mosier Indoor Facility in Norman.
