Carter secures double-double in Midwestern State's 61-48 loss to Adams State

ALAMOSA, Colorado --Zarria Carter notched her second double-double of the season with 24 points and 10 rebounds, but the Midwestern State women's basketball team fell to the Adams State 61-48 on the road Saturday.

In addition to Carter's solid showing, the Mustangs (0-2) were led by Aniya Williams, who had two points and 10 rebounds, and by Trinidi King, who added three points and three steals coming off the bench.

Carter pulled down eight offensive rebounds to pace an offense that racked up second chance opportunities for Midwestern State, grabbing 16 boards and turning them into 15 second chance points.

Midwestern State's defense held Adams State to only 19.2 percent shooting from beyond the arc and 33.3 percent from the field. The Mustangs also limited Ri'Ahana Davis to 1-of-8 shooting from downtown in the game.

How It Happened

After falling behind 8-5, Midwestern State went on a 6-0 run with 5:35 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from Calyssa Sevier, to take an 11-8 lead. The Mustangs then lost some of that lead, but still entered the quarter break with a 15-14 advantage. Midwestern State capitalized on eight Adams State turnovers in the period, turning them into six points on the other end of the floor.

The Mustangs could not maintain their lead in the second quarter and entered halftime trailing 24-22.

Adams State continued to increase its lead after halftime, building a 27-24 advantage before Midwestern State went on a 6-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Williams, to grab a 30-27 lead with 6:42 to go in the third. Adams State responded to seize a 40-38 lead entering the fourth quarter. Midwestern State played well near the basket, scoring 12 of its 16 points in the paint.

Midwestern State could not pull any closer in the fourth, losing by a final of 61-48. Midwestern State took advantage of four Adams State turnovers in the quarter, scoring three points off of those takeaways.
