Carter's double-double leads Mustangs past Rogers State in home opener

WICHITA FALLS, Texas --The Midwestern State finished with a strong fourth period to beat Rogers State 65-53 in its home opener Friday night at D.L. Ligon Coliseum.

The Mustangs (1-2) had three players score in double figures, led by Zarria Carter, who notched a double-double with 22 points and 15 rebounds. Kerbie Cash added 15 points and three steals, while Calyssa Sevier helped out with 14 points, four assists and five steals.

Led by Carter's seven offensive rebounds, Midwestern State did a great job crashing the offensive glass, pulling down 21 boards that resulted in 20 second chance points.

Midwestern State's defense held Rogers State to only 36.7 percent shooting from the field.

The Mustangs take on Central Oklahoma Saturday night at D.L. Ligon Coliseum. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m.

How It Happened

Midwestern State struggled out of the gate, falling behind 13-7 at the end of the first quarter.

Midwestern State kept the Hillcats from increasing their lead before going on a 10-0 run, highlighted by a bucket from Carter, to take a 26-22 lead. The Hillcats cut into that lead, but the Mustangs still enjoyed a 29-27 advantage heading into halftime. Midwestern State forced five Rogers State turnovers in the period and turned them into eight points.

Midwestern State then lost its advantage in the third quarter and trailed the Hillcats 40-39 entering the fourth. Midwestern State took advantage of eight Rogers State turnovers in the quarter, scoring four points off of takeaways.

Midwestern State managed to gain control and had a 58-51 lead before going on a 7-0 run to grow the lead to 65-51 with nine seconds to go in the contest. The Hillcats narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Mustangs still cruised the rest of the way for the 65-53 win. Midwestern State took advantage of eight Rogers State turnovers in the quarter, scoring 11 points off of those takeaways.
