Midwestern State falls to UC-Colorado Springs in season opener, 67-57

COLORADO SPRINGS, CO --The Midwestern State women's basketball team took a 48-45 advantage into the fourth quarter, but could not hang on and fell 67-57 to the UC-Colorado Springs Mountain Lions on the road Friday.

Zarria Carter secured a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Mustangs (0-1). Aniya Williams also added four points, nine rebounds and three steals. Alyssa Hutterer helped out with nine points and three steals off of the bench.

Williams pulled down five offensive rebounds to pace an offense that racked up second chance opportunities for Midwestern State, grabbing 17 boards and turning them into 12 second chance points.

 Midwestern State forced 18 UC-Colorado Springs turnovers. Those takeaways turned into 12 points on the offensive end of the floor. Carter's four steals led the way for the Mustangs.

How It Happened

Midwestern State kept it close in the first quarter, but entered the second frame down 19-18.

Midwestern State fought back to tie the game at 26-26 before going on a 6-0 run to take a 32-26 lead. The Mountain Lions then battled back to even it up at 32-32 heading into halftime. Midwestern State was strong from deep in the period, knocking down two three-point shots to account for six of its 14 points.

Midwestern State started the third quarter on a high note, going on a 5-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Kerbie Cash, to grab a 37-32 lead with 8:09 to go in the third. Before the conclusion of the third period, the Mountain Lions had cut into that lead somewhat, but the Mustangs still entered the fourth quarter with a 48-45 edge. Midwestern State's bench made the most of its minutes in the period, as non-starters totaled 10 of the team's 16 third-quarter points.

UC-Colorado Springs then erased the Midwestern State lead in the game's final quarter for a 67-57 victory. Midwestern State pulled down five offensive rebounds to score two second chance points out of nine total in the period
