WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- Midwestern State is the No. 2 seed in Super Region 4 and hosts No. 7-seed Cal Poly Pamona in the second round of the NCAA Division II Soccer Championship on Sunday afternoon. Kickoff at Stang Park is scheduled for 3 p.m.
In an effort to "Pack the Park," faculty and staff will receive free admission to Sunday's match with a valid Midwestern State ID, courtesy of the Office of the President. The first 250 students will also receive a free food ticket to use at one of the attending local food trucks – El Norteno on Wheels, Kafe Maya and Fazmoz Caribbean Cuisine.
The Mustangs are making their 19th appearance in the NCAA Tournament, and this is the 15th season that Midwestern State has hosted NCAA Division II Soccer Championship matches.
Midwestern State midfielder
Mere Escobar, two-time Lone Star Conference Player of the Year, is the leading goal scorer in the LSC and is the sixth-leading goal scorer among NCAA Division II players with 15 goals scored for the Mustangs. Escobar also has nine assists for 39 total points, which also leads the league and is fifth most in the nation.
Escobar scored his 15th goal of the season and the 59th of his career against St. Edward's in the semifinals of the Lone Star Conference Tournament, which set the MSU school record for career goals. The senior surpassed the career output of Alvin Alexander from 1975-78 and Kris Henderson from 1987-90. The native of Austin, Texas, has scored two or more goals in a game 13 times in his career and for five times this season.
During his career, the Mustangs are an astounding 40-0-2 when Escobar scores.
Samuele Muroni is the second-leading goal scorer for the Stang Gang with seven goals and among players with at least 20 shots, Muroni has the highest shots-on-goal percentage for MSU at .571 — 16 of his 28 shots have been on frame this season.
Max Gonzales has scored six times this season, including twice against Texas A&M International on Oct. 5.
Eduardo Cerna scored two goals and added an assist in the 3-1 win over St. Edward's in the conference tournament and has scored four goals this season. Cerna has nine points for the Mustangs.
Head coach
Michael Meachum reached a milestone with a 3-1 victory over St. Mary's in the Mustangs' last regular season match. In his seventh season at the helm, Meachum has a record of 102-21-12 and a winning percentage of .800.
Goalkeeper
Daniel Robles improved his record to 9-1-3 in 14 appearances. The 6-2 junior from Tyler, Texas, has allowed 16 goals and made 32 saves with a .667 save percentage. His goals-against average is 1.17. Robles has three shutouts this season.
Caly Poly Pomana is making its 10th appearance in the NCAA Division II Soccer Championship and defeated upstart Westmont in the first round at Stang Park on Friday afternoon, 2-1, improving its all-time record at Stang Park to 6-1-1, including a 3-1-0 record under head coach Matt O'Sullivan.
The school-record unbeaten streak extended to 19 matches. The Broncos are 12-0-7 since a 1-0 loss to Point Loma on Sept. 7.
Mike Moser scored his fifth goal of the season in the second minute, and Mads Frederiksen scored in the 83rd minute to break a 1-1 tie against the Warriors, who were making their first-ever appearance in the NCAA Division II Soccer Championship. Sam Lena assisted on both goals for the Broncos.
Cal Poly Pomona won its first CCAA regular season title in the Matt O'Sullivan-era and boast a 13-1-7 overall record.
The Broncos made their second straight appearance in the CCAA Tournament Finals but fell to Cal State Dominguez Hills on penalty kicks. Cal Poly Pomona made three appearances in the Final Four from 2015-2018.
Max Laguna is the leading goal scorer for Cal Poly Pomona with eight goals, and he also has six assists for a team-leading 22 points. Fredriksen is second on the team with 15 points from five goals and five assists. Lena leads the team with seven assists and has nine points for the Broncos.
Luke Garciduenas is 13-1-6 with nine clean sheets as the Broncos' goalkeeper. The junior from Pomona, California, has a 0.65 goals-against average. He has conceded 13 goals while making 54 saves for a save percentage of .806.
The winner of Sunday's match meets either No. 3-seed UC Colorado Springs or sixth-seeded Fort Lewis in the third round of the tournament on Sunday, Dec. 1.
