Midwestern State battles Lubbock Christian in LSC match at Stang Park

WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- Midwestern State looks to remain unbeaten at home and rebound from its 3-1 loss at West Texas A&M as it hosts Lubbock Christian for a match at Stang Park on Wednesday night. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.

Samuele Muroni scored his seventh goal of the season in the 25th minute at The Pitch in Canyon on Saturday afternoon, but Gabriel Navarez scored in the opening minute of the second half, and added another goal in the 83rd minute as the Buffaloes ended the Mustangs five-game unbeaten streak.

Midwestern State is 9-2-3 overall with a 4-2-1 conference record. The Mustangs have a plus-11 goal differential and are averaging 2.21 goals per game, which leads the Lone Star Conference and is the 28th-highest scoring offense in NCAA Division II this season.

Mere Escobar has scored 12 goals this season and is the sixth-leading goal scorer in the country among NCAA Division II players. The senior from Austin, Texas, also leads the team with six assists and is sixth in the nation with 30 points.

Escobar has 56 career goals at Midwestern State and is the third all-time leading goal scorer in the history of the program. Only Alvin Alexander and Kris Henderson have scored more goals wearing the Maroon & Gold. Alexander netted 58 goals from 1975-1978, and Henderson scored 58 goals from 1987-1990.

Liam Pritchard has five assists, and Jaime Villagomez has assisted on three goals for the Stangs this season. Gabriel Gacovicaj, Anthony Perea and Tea Cooper each have a goal and two assists. Ethan Krchnak and Skyler Krchnak each have two assists.

Midwestern State leads the conference and is 18th in the nation with 2.07 assists per game. The Mustangs average 6.50 points per game, which leads the LSC and is 25th in the nation.

Escobar and Muroni lead the way as Midwestern State puts 7.57 shots on goal per game, which leads the conference and is 15th-best in the nation. Escobar is ninth in the nation and leading the conference with two shots on goal per game. Muroni is fourth in the conference with 1.14 shots on goal per game.

Daniel Robles has made 21 saves in nine appearances as the Mustangs goalkeeper this season. The junior for Tyler, Texas, has a save percentage of .636 and a 1.39 goals-against average. Robles is 4-1-3 as the Mustangs starting goalkeeper in the last eight matches. Robles has posted two clean sheets for MSU this season.

Midwestern State is 9-0-4 in the all-time series with Lubbock Christian, and defeated the Chaparrals last season, 5-1, as Escobar finished with a goal and two assists in the victory for MSU.

The Mustangs are 4-0-2 when hosting the Chaparrals, who lost their last visit, 2-1, in October of 2022.

Lubbock Christian is 5-5-5 overall with a 2-3-3 conference record. The Chaparrals are coming off a 1-1 draw with Dallas Baptist as Nako Amare scored in the 46th minute for Lubbock Christian, which held the lead for nearly 15 minutes before conceding a goal to Evan Pustejovsky of Dallas Baptist.

Lubbock Christian is playing its final road game of the regular season and is 3-2-2 as the away team this season.

Senior goalkeeper Connor Pettigrew leads the Lone Star Conference with 63 saves this season and has the sixth-best save percentage in the conference at .733. Pettigrew is making 4.20 saves per game, which is second-best in the conference.

Pettigrew has allowed 23 goals and has a goals-against average of 1.53 with five clean sheets during the season.

Justin Martinez is the leading goal scorer for Lubbock Christian with five goals on 30 shots, and 17 of his shots have been on frame. Nako Amare and Geoffroy Letienne have each scored three goals for the Chaparrals.

Francisco Horta and Saimon Gjeci have each scored twice for Lubbock Christian, which has a minus-five goal differential, outscored by its opponents, 123-118. Manu Nunez has a team-leading three assists for the Chaparrals.

Midwestern State travels to Eastern New Mexico for its final road game of the regular season on Saturday. Kickoff at Greyhound Stadium is scheduled for 7 p.m.
