Zarria Carter led a spirted fourth-quarter comeback Saturday afternoon at Greyhound Arena.
The Mustangs climbed all the way back from a 15-point deficit before falling to Eastern New Mexico, 65-61.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Eastern New Mexico outscored Midwestern State 21-3 over the final eight minutes of the opening half to take a 32-23 at halftime.
The Greyhounds extended the lead to a game-high 15 points when Vanessa Oduah converted a layup to give ENMU a 51-36 advantage with 1:31 left in the third period.
But MSU junior
Zarria Carter scored 14 of her game-high 27 points in the fourth period, netting eight points during a 12-2 run as the Mustangs surged to a 59-58 lead with 1:25 to go.
Eastern New Mexico connected on 7-of-8 free throws in the final 52 second of the game and forced a key turnover before surviving two 3-point attempts by
Catalina Cortez and another by
Nikki Green.
LEADERS
- Junior
Zarria Carter continued to shine for the Mustangs, delivering her third consecutive 20-point performance. She poured in 27 points on 10-of-16 shooting and missed her sixth-straight double-double by one rebound -- finishing with nine.
- Senior
Kertisa Amos scored 15 points on 7-of-11 shooting with five rebounds and three steals before fouling out in 23 minutes. It was her fifth disqualification of the season.
- Sophomore
Catalina Cortez dished out five assists and made two steals in 38 minutes.
- Eastern New Mexico senior Deja Adrian notched her first double-double of the season, leading the Greyhounds with 16 points and 10 rebounds.
TEAM NOTES
- Eastern New Mexico won its second straight game over Midwestern State after also beating the Mustangs 80-55 last season in Portales. MSU continues to lead the series, 31-25.
- Eastern New Mexico snapped a seven-game slide to improve to 5-9 on the season and to 1-7 in Lone Star Conference play.
- Midwestern State dipped to 4-11 on the season and moved to 4-5 in league play. The Mustangs have still won four of their last six.
- Eastern New Mexico grabbed 17 offensive rebounds, resulting in 16 second-chance points.
