Nikki Green poured in a season-high 23 points, and junior forward
Zarria Carter posted her eighth double-double of the season with 20 points and 10 rebounds, but Angelo State shot 57.6 percent from the field and had four players score in double figures on its way to a 93-71 victory over Midwestern State at D.L. Ligon Coliseum on Thursday night.
Midwestern State kept pace with the Rambelles during the first half. The game was tied 21-21 at the end of the first quarter as Green hit 4-of-6 shots and scored nine points to lead the Mustangs in the opening 10 minutes.
Tayjanna McGhee-Pleasant scored seven of the first nine points for Angelo State and added 11 points in the second quarter as the Rambelles took a 43-39 halftime lead.
Angelo State opened the third quarter with a nine-point run, led by Madeline Stephens, who scored seven points in the opening 2:12 of the second half.
Stephens was 5-for-5 in the third quarter as the Rambelles hit 13-of-18 shots and established a 73-54 lead by the end of the third period.
Angelo State held the Mustangs to 2-of-14 shooting in the fourth quarter and cruised to its fourth-straight victory in the series, which the Rambelles lead, 42-32.
McGhee-Pleasant scored 29 points and pulled down 10 rebounds for Angelo State, which has won seven of its last eight games and improved to 13-5 with a 7-2 conference record.
Stephens finished the night with 22 points, 12 rebounds, six assists, four blocks and two steals.
Sawyer Lloyd had 17 points, eight rebounds, eight assists, one block and one steal in the victory.
Landry Morrow contributed 12 points, six assists, five rebounds and two steals, helping Angelo State outscore the Mustangs in transition, 32-10.
The Rambelles registered an assist on 26 of their 38 field goals, and outrebounded Midwestern State, 47-35.
Senior wing
Kertisa Amos had eight points, five rebounds and five steals for the Mustangs, who scored 16 points off 17 turnovers.
Green was 9 of 12 from the free-throw line, and MSU finished 16 of 20 from the charity stripe. Angelo State was 9 of 18 at the foul line.
Senior guard
Eternity Jackson was 3 of 5 from the floor and scored seven points for the Mustangs, who were held to 34.7 percent shooting from the field and went 5 of 12 from 3-point range.
Catalina Cortez was 2 of 4 from beyond the arc and added three assists to go with her six points in the loss. Green was 2 of 6 from three-point distance.
Midwestern State has lost back-to-back games for the first time since a 70-67 setback at St. Mary's on Dec. 6.
The Mustangs are 4-12 with a 4-6 conference record entering Saturday's tilt with UT Permian Basin at D.L. Ligon Coliseum. Tipoff against the Falcons is scheduled for 1 p.m.
