Mustangs set for final regular season tournament at NCAA West Region Spring Preview

ROHNERT PARK, Calif. -- Midwestern State competes in its 10th tournament of the season Monday and Tuesday in the NCAA West Regional Spring Preview at Foxtail Golf Club.

LAST TIME OUT | Mason Mikeska finished regulation tied at the top of the leader board in his second consecutive tournament at the Palm Valley Classic. The senior from Waco carded scores of 71, 72, and 70 for a 3-under total of 213, but lost on the first playoff hole to Colorado Mesa's Cole Beyer. Midwestern State was the best team over the final 36 holes, but had to settle for a fifth-place finish with a 24-over team total of 888. The Mustangs rebounded from an opening round 308 to fire a 299 in the second round before going 7-under as a team with a 281. Redshirt-freshman Seth Bearden recorded his first Top 10 individual finish firing a 4-over 220 (77-75-68).

THE FIELD IN GOLFSTAT RANKINGS | The 20-team field at the NCAA West Regional Spring Preview features 13 teams ranked in the GolfStat NCAA Division II Top 50. Colorado State-Pueblo is the highest ranked team at No. 10 followed by Midwestern State (15), Cameron (17), Sonoma State (19), Western Washington (21), California State-San Marcos (26), California State-San Bernardino (28), Simon Fraser (37), California State-Monterey Bay (38), Stanislaus State (41), Holy Names (43), Hawaii-Hilo (46), and California State-East Bay (50). Filling out the field are UC Colorado Springs (63), California State-Dominguez Hills (67), UT Tyler (74), Saint Martin's (90), Dominican (Calif.) (107), Hawaii Pacific (132), and Academy of Art (147).

MUSTANGS AT FOXTAIL GOLF CLUB | The Midwestern State men make their first appearance at Foxtail Golf Club in Rohnert Park, California, but the course is of great historical significance for MSU. Brenna Moore won the 2015 NCAA Division II Super Region Four Championship played at Foxtail Golf Club on the way to claiming the school's first varsity national championship playing as an individual.

MIDWESTERN STATE LINEUP

NO. 1 BAG | Senior Garrett Leek is Midwestern State's program leader with 460 career birdies and with 17 eagles. He is ranked 71st in the most recent GolfStat individual rankings with an adjusted scoring average of 71.83. Leek boasts 16 par-or-better scores this season with seven rounds in the 60s. He leads the Mustangs with a 71.46 scoring average and possesses a finish percentage of 84.2.

NO. 2 BAG | Senior Jake Leatherwood ranks 108th in the most recent GolfStat individual rankings with an adjusted scoring average of 73.11. The Snyder native ranks third on the Mustangs with a season scoring average of 72.74 with 13 par-or-better scores and three rounds in the 60s. He boasts four Top 10 finishes this season, including three consecutive Top 10 showings at the start of the spring semester. Leatherwood has produced a team countable total in each of his 27 tournament rounds this season.

NO. 3 BAG | Senior Mason Mikeska ranks 35th in the most recent GolfStat individual rankings with an adjusted scoring average of 72.26. The Waco native is second on the team with a 71.89 stroke average posting 12 par-or-better scores and three rounds in the 60s. Mikeska is enjoying a stellar spring semester which including Top 10 individual showings at the Houston Classic (6th), Hardscrabble Invitational (T-4th), the King-Alfred Invitational (5th), the Hot Dirt Desert Shootout (T-1st), and Palm Valley Classic (T-1st). Mikeska recorded team countable performances in 26 of his 27 tournament rounds. His only non-counter was a 1-over 71 at the Ryan Palmer Foundation Invitational. Mikeska has finished in the top six of all five tournaments this spring with a stroke average of 71.33 during the run to boost his season finish percentage to a team-best 86.6.

NO. 4 BAG | Freshman Seth Bearden has qualified for all six tournaments this spring after competing twice in the fall as an individual medalist only. The Crowell native produced his third Top 20 finish by tying for 14th at the King-Alfred Invitational firing scores of 73, 71, and 78 for a 9-over total of 222, then made his first Top-10 showing at the Palm Valley Classic carding scores of 77, 75, and 68 for a 4-over 220. Bearden boasts a stroke average of 74.10 with seven par-or-better scores and two scores in the 60s in his first 21 rounds of collegiate golf.

NO. 5 BAG | Junior Keaton Dickens produced his fifth Top 25 individual finish of the season at the King-Alfred Invitational. He fired scores of 73, 78, and 76 to tie for 24th. Dickens also boasts a 10th-place finish at the Ryan Palmer Foundation Invitational (67-69-73) and tied for 25th in The Hrnciar (73-72-78) during the fall semester. Dickens boasts a season stroke average of 75.11 with six par-or-better scores and two rounds in the 60s over 27 tournament rounds.
