TUCSON, Arizona -- Makenna Henry fought through a tough start and an even tougher end to lead Midwestern State into sixth place through the first round of the West Texas A&M Desert Invitational Monday afternoon at The Lodge at Ventana Canyon.

The sophomore from Sour Lake, Texas, paced the Mustangs with a 8-over 80 to tie for 19th through the opening 18 holes.

Henry opened with four consecutive bogeys before righting the ship going even-par with two birdies and two bogeys over the next 13 holes. She ended the day taking a seven on the par-3, 141-yard sixth hole.

As a team, the Mustangs overcame a rough start falling to the bottom of the leader board before grinding their way all the way to third then settled in to tie for sixth with a 38-over 326.

MSU trails tournament leading California State-East Bay (316/+28) by 10 strokes, while the Otters are trailed by Point Loma (318/+30), Colorado State-Pueblo (320/+32), West Texas A&M (323/+35), MSU Denver (325/+36), and Midwestern State.

MSU sophomore Hollie James and freshman Kodi Nolen are tied for 26th with a 9-over 81, while freshman Tristan Gabbard is tied for 48th with a 12-over 84.

Frosh Alli Reily and sophomore Brecklyn Flanagan, who is competing as an individual only, are knotted for 66th with a 14-over 86.

Colorado State-Pueblo freshman Minna Archer tops the individual leader board with a 3-over 75, taking a one-stroke lead over teammate Kylie Severin, Point Loma's Alli Kim, and St. Mary's Estelle Beck into Tuesday's final round which begins with a shotgun start at 10 a.m. (Central Time).
