WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- Amelia Lawson of Midwestern State (14-5) and Teodora Vrucan of UT Permian Basin (2-11) battled for nearly two and a half hours at No. 1 singles on Saturday, but Lawson pulled away for a 6-4, 3-6, 6-0 victory and propelled the No. 38-ranked Mustangs to an arduous 5-2 dual-match triumph at MSU Tennis Center on Saturday.
Lawson improved to 10-8 in singles matches this season and has played the No. 1 position in all 19 duals this season. The fifth-year senior also paired with
Sydney Williams at No. 1 doubles and defeated Vrucan and Montserrat Salazar, 6-3, helping the Mustang win the doubles point to start the day.
Lawson has won three consecutive singles matches and is 12-4 with eight straight wins in doubles alongside Williams. The doubles tandem is ranked No. 31 in the nation.
Emilija Visic recorded her third-straight singles victory by posting a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Brooke Runyan of UTPB. Visic is 3-0 in her career against the Falcons, including a 6-4, 6-0 triumph over Lisa Guitton last season in Midland.
Visic paired with
Skylar Minns for a 6-2 victory in doubles earlier in the dual. The duo has reeled off three consecutive victories and improved to 10-1 this season.
Micaela McSpadden clinched the victory for the Mustangs with a routine 6-2, 6-1 win over Tuva Asplund at No. 6 singles. The sophomore from Oologah, Oklahoma, celebrated her third straight singles victory for the Mustangs and has won seven of her last eight matches, improving to 7-3 this season.
Skylar Minns and Guitton decided a marathon match in a super tiebreak at No. 5 singles after splitting a pair of tiebreaks in the first two sets. Minns pulled away for a 10-6 victory in two hours and 41 minutes. The junior from New Braunfels is 11-1 this season.
Rhea Singh earned a point for the Falcons with a 6-2, 6-4 triumph over
Hannah Yip at No. 2 singles. Thanh Nguyen took the point for UTPB at No. 3 singles, defeating
Alice Di Matteo, 6-4, 6-4. Sing and Nguyen teamed up in doubles to defeat Di Matteo and
Kanaha Furutani, 6-4, in the No. 2 position.
The Mustangs are 10-1 in the all-time series with the Falcons and have won all four encounters at MSU Tennis Center. Midwestern State is 6-1 at home this season.
Midwestern State travels to UT Tyler on Friday for an LSC dual-match that gets underway at 10 a.m.
