DBU stuns Mustangs, 5-2

ARLINGTON, Texas -- Dallas Baptist snapped out of a funk to beat Midwestern State 5-2 in a Lone Star Conference match Saturday afternoon at the Arlington Tennis Center.

The Patriots, who had lost five of their last six, improved to 16-7 overall while leveling their LSC record at 4-4. Midwestern State ended a three-match winning streak to fall to 14-6 overall while falling back into tie with three other teams with two losses in league play at 5-2.

The Mustangs dropped all three doubles matches for just the second time this season, allowing DBU build early momentum.

The No. 12-ranked duo of Angela Charles-Alfred and Jenna Payne set the tone by snapping No. 34-ranked Amelia Lawson and Sydney Williams' eight-match winning streak, 6-1, at No. 1 doubles.

The Patriots completed the doubles' sweep with Madison Stafford and Caroline Hudson beating Alice Di Matteo and Kanaha Furutani 6-4 at No. 2, while Sofia Teran and Isabella Rios combined to beat Skylar Minns and Emilija Visic 7-5 at No. 3.

Dallas Baptist extended its lead to 3-0 with a pair of straight-set victories at the bottom of the order.

Teran beat Midwestern State sophomore Micaela McSpadden 6-2, 6-1 at No. 5, then Payne defeated Williams 6-2, 7-5 at No. 6 to put the Patriots on the brink of team victory.

Di Matteo put the Mustangs on the board with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Leonie Schondelmaier at No. 2 right before Hudson clinched the match with a 6-4, 7-5 win over Visic at No. 3 singles.

MSU senior Amelia Lawson won her fourth consecutive match to improve to 11-8 at the No. 1 position with a 6-4, 4-6, 10-5 win over Stafford.

Minns suffered her second setback of the season for MSU, falling 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 at No. 4 singles. The junior from New Braunfels sports an 11-2 mark in dual play this season.

Midwestern State returns to action on the road Tuesday against UT Tyler at Summers Tennis Center. First serve is set for 11 a.m. The match was originally slated for Friday, but was postponed due to forecasted rain.
