WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- Killian Guillou remained undefeated while
Luis Diaz Argente and
Charles Heffernan each won their third consecutive match as No. 28-ranked Midwestern State (11-7) dismantled UT Permian Basin (8-7), 6-1, at the MSU Tennis Center on Saturday afternoon. The Mustangs have won their last three duals and are 4-0 in the Lone Star Conference.
Guillou needed less than an hour to defeat Roberto Garcia-Arrabal at No. 4 singles, 6-0, 6-1. Guillou won a set at love for the third time this season and improved to 9-0 for the Mustangs. The freshman from France is 3-0 in the No. 4 position this season.
Diaz continued his impressive run with a 6-1, 6-2 triumph over Patrick Kosinski in the No. 1 position. The senior from Spain has won three straight singles matches against conference foes, and the run began for Diaz with a come-from-behind 3-6, 7-6, 6-3 win over 13th-ranked Martins Abamu at Lubbock Christian. Diaz won both matches at home this weekend in convincing fashion, losing just five of 29 games.
Heffernan, a senior from Australia, has won four of his last five matches and continued to show good form on Saturday with a 6-4, 6-0 win over Takumi Katsuda. Heffernan has won his last four starts in the No. 2 position and improved to 8-8 for the season.
Heffernan's victory clinched the dual for the Mustangs, who captured the doubles point to start the day.
Heffernan and Guillou improved to 5-3 as a duo with a 6-1 victory over Paul Schweiger and Hector Flores at No. 3 doubles.
Germano Setti and
Marcal Miret Avante secured the point with a 6-3 victory over Gregorz Rudnicki and Kosinski. Setti and Miret even their record as a duo at 8-8. Katsuda and Jonas Krahofer upended Diaz and
Stephen Slocombe at No. 1 doubles, 6-2. Diaz and Slocombe had won their first two matches as a pairing for the Mustangs.
Rudnicki earned the only point for the Falcons with a grueling 7-5, 4-6, 15-13 victory over Miret at No. 3 singles. Miret had a five-match winning streak snapped and fell to 11-6 in singles.
Setti improved his singles record to 12-6 with a 6-3, 6-1 triumph over Schwieger at No. 5 singles.
Slocombe closed out the day by earning his fourth win in five outings. The sophomore defeated Krahofer, 6-0, 6-1, in the No. 6 position.
UTPB has never beaten Midwestern State in a dual-match and five of the 11 losses have come at MSU Tennis Center.
Midwestern State travels to UT Tyler on Friday for an LSC dual-match that gets underway at 10 a.m.
