Midwestern State blows past WNMU, 6-1

WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- On a windswept day at MSU Tennis Center, Midwestern State defeated Western New Mexico, 6-1, and improved to 13-5 on the season with a 4-1 record in the Lone Star Conference. WNMU is 6-6 this season with a 1-5 record in conference duals.

Amelia Lawson handled Willemijn Van Mierlo, 6-1, 6-3, and clinched the dual-match victory with her win at No. 1 singles. Lawson posted her second consecutive straight-set victory and is 9-8 in the No. 1 position. Lawson is 2-3 in conference matches this season.

Skylar Minns rolled to a 6-2, 6-0 triumph at No. 4 singles, defeating Caini Wang, 6-2, 6-0. Minns is 3-0 in the No. 4 position and improved to 10-1 for the season. Minns has won four of her five matches against LSC foes.

Emilija Visic marched past Livia Leite, 6-2, 6-2, earning the point at No. 3 singles for the second time this season. Visic improved to 9-7 overall this season, and the junior from Phoenix is 3-2 in conference matches.

Sydney Williams frustrated Kajsa Gedlitschka on her way to a 6-0, 6-0 victory in the No. 6 position. The sophomore from Austin, Texas, is 6-3 this season and all six wins have come in straight sets. Williams has won three sets at love this year.

Micaela McSpadden earned the victory at No. 5 singles with a 6-2, 6-4 triumph over Mann-Ning Li. McSpadden has won six of her last seven matches and improved to 6-3 this season. The sophomore from Oologah, Oklahoma, is 1-1 in the No. 5 position.

Hannah Yip suffered her second-straight defeat as Jenny Larsson of WNMU won at No. 2 singles, 6-1, 7-5. Yip is 7-9 overall with a 2-3 record in the conference.

Midwestern State easily won the doubles point as Visic and Minns were 6-0 winners over Van Mierlo and Li at the No. 3 position. Williams and Lawson, ranked No. 31 in the nation, coasted to a 6-1 victory over Wang and Gedlitschka. Alice Di Matteo and Kanaha Furutani posted a 6-4 victory over Jenny Larsson and Livia Leite.

Western New Mexico is bound for UT Tyler on Saturday, while Midwestern State welcomes UT Permian Basin for an LSC dual-match on Saturday at 10 a.m.
