LUBBOCK, Texas -- Midwestern State improved to 12-5 overall and 3-1 in the Lone Star Conference with a convincing 6-1 triumph over upstart Lubbock Christian. The Chaparrals are competing in the LSC for the first time this season and were overwhelmed by the Mustangs Tuesday afternoon at Penny Gullo Tennis Center.
Alice Di Matteo and
Kanaha Furutani coasted to a 6-1 triumph at No. 2 doubles, and the doubles point was secured when
Emilija Visic and
Skylar Minns eased to a 6-2 victory at No. 3 doubles.
Amelia Lawson and
Sydney Williams won their match at the No. 1 position, 7-5.
Di Matteo and Furutani improved to 9-7 with their victory over Anastasiia Khrustaleva and Anastasiia Opolska.
Visic and Minns rebound from their first loss and improve to 8-1 by defeating Oshini Herath and Taylor Nichols.
Williams and Lawson have a six-match winning streak in doubles and are 10-4 as a duo after beating Michelle Trochez and Axelle Jacquenim.
Armed with a 1-0 lead, the Mustangs took care of business in singles.
Lawson enjoyed a double bagel with a 6-0, 6-0 victory at No. 1 singles, defeating Khrustaleva. Lawson picked up her first win in four LSC singles matches this season and handed Khrustaleva her fourth-straight loss in singles for the Chaparrals.
Visic halted a three-match skid in singles with a 6-1, 6-4 triumph over Herath at the No. 4 position. Visic improved to 8-7 in singles for the Mustangs this season.
Fifth-year senior
Alice Di Matteo of Palermo, Italy, clinched the dual-match for MSU with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Jacquemin at No. 3 singles.
Micaela McSpadden won the opening set against Opolska, 6-4, but the freshman from Ukraine rallied back with a 6-2 victory in the second set. In the super tiebreak, McSpadden pulled out a 10-8 triumph and improved to 5-2 in the No. 6 position for Midwestern State.
Skylar Minns was also pressed into a super tiebreak after winning the first set over Maya Adler at No. 5 singles, 6-3. Adler won a tightly contested second set, 7-5, but Minns dominated the super tiebreak, 10-2. Minns is 9-1 in singles for the Mustangs. Her eight previous victories were all in straight sets.
Hannah Yip, who won four of her previous five singles matches for MSU and earned the only point at Angelo State on Saturday, lost in straight sets to Trochez at No. 2 singles, 5-7, 1-6. Trochez has won three of her last four matches for the Chaparrals and is 7-4 for the season in singles. Yip is 7-8 overall with a 2-2 record against LSC opponents in singles.
Lubbock Christian is 1-3 in conference duals this season and 10-7 overall.
Midwestern State hosts Western New Mexico at the MSU Tennis Center on Friday. First serve is scheduled for 10 a.m.
