Mustangs suffer first home loss of the season

WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- Midwestern State captured the doubles point but dropped four singles matches in its first-ever meeting with Missouri Western, and the Griffons handed MSU its first home loss of the season Wednesday afternoon at the MSU Tennis Center, 4-1.

The Mustangs (10-4) fell to 5-1 at home this season and had a three-dual winning streak snapped. Missouri Western (8-2) began a four-dual road trip and is 1-1 as the visitor this season.

Emilija Visic and Skylar Minns secured the doubles point with a 6-4 triumph over Lucia Casas Blas and Ariella Curci at the No. 3 position. Visic and Minns improved to 6-0 as a pairing for the Mustangs this season.

Amelia Lawson and Sydney Williams put the Mustangs in front with a convincing 6-2 victory in the No. 1 position. Lawson and Williams are 7-4 at No. 1 doubles this season and have a three-match winning streak.

Lucia Casas Blas drew the Griffons even with Midwestern State by posting a 6-1, 7-5 win over Visic in the No. 4 singles match. Casas Blas earned her 10th consecutive win for Western Missouri and has won seven straight sets. Visic is now 7-5 in singles for Midwestern State.

Hannah Yip had won back-to-back matches and was in a close battle with Isabella MacGibbon at No. 2 singles, but the Griffons prevailed, 6-4, 7-5. Yip is 5-7 in singles this season. MacGibbon has won four of her last five singles matches for Western Missouri and improved to 6-3 this season.

After dropping the first set 6-4, Williams battled back to win the second set over Nicole Donnelly, 6-2. Donnelly pulled away from the sophomore in the decisive set 6-2, and the Griffons took a 3-1 lead in the dual. Williams has lost back-to-back matches for the first time this season and is 5-3 in singles for the Mustangs. Donnelly extended her winning streak to three matches for Western Missouri.

Cristina Granero Boj took the first set from Alice Di Matteo, 6-4, but the Midwestern State senior forced a tiebreak in the second set. Granero Boj clinched the dual with a 7-2 victory in the tiebreak. Di Matteo is 2-2 in tiebreaks during singles matches this season and is 6-5 in singles overall for the Mustangs.

Midwestern State is on the road to face Texas A&M Kingsville on Friday, and the Mustangs visit Angelo State on Saturday. Both duals get underway at noon.
