TYLER, Texas -- Midwestern State's Hollie James used a 9-iron to record a Hole-in-One on the Par-3, 140-yard 13th Hole Monday afternoon in the King Alfred Spring Invitational at the Cascades Golf Club.

The feat added to an already stellar day for the sophomore from Rockwall, who added five birdies on the way to a carding scores of 74 and 71. James is just a stroke off of the pace of Angelo State's Maria Sierra Sanz, who fired matching 72s for a 2-over total of 144.

"Hollie played like we know she can," MSU assistant coach Brad Corley said. "For her, (the Hole-in-One was a very inspirational deal. She had one when she was 9-yeard old, but that was from 40 yards out."

Unfortunately for the Mustangs, James was competing as an individual medalist only in the dual-format tournament. The teams simultaneously played stroke play and medal match play.

In stroke play, MSU improved 15 strokes from an opening round 311 to fire a 296 in the second round.

The Mustangs stand fourth with a 36-hole, team total of 607 trailing Angelo State (594/+26), UT Tyler (599/+31), and St. Mary's (600/+32) at the top of the leader board.

Freshman Tristan Gabbard led the way by firing scores of 76 and 72 for a 6-over 148 to tie for sixth, while Beatrice Perucchini (77-76) and Kodi Nolen (79-74) tied for 16th with 11-over totals of 153.

Freshman Makenna Henry logged scores of 79 and 75 to tie for 19th with a 12-over total of 154, while freshman Brecklyn Flanagan bounced back from an 86 in the first round to fire a 75 in the second round to place 35th with a 19-over 161.

Freshman Alli Reily, who was also playing as an individual only, tied for 26th with a 16-over 158. The Pottsboro native carded scores of 77 and 81.

In medal match play, the Mustangs fell to Lubbock Christian, 3-2, in the first round before sweeping Cameron, 5-0, in the second round.

Midwestern State squares off with Angelo State in the fifth-place matchup in Tuesday final round.
