WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- Midwestern State rolled to its fifth consecutive win, while dealing No. 14-ranked St. Mary's its first loss of the season in resounding fashion Saturday afternoon at the MSU Tennis Center.
The Mustangs (6-2, 1-0 LSC) swept doubles play before taking four of the six singles' matches to roll to a convincing 5-2 win.
MSU claimed the doubles point for its fifth-straight match against an NCAA Division II opponent ignited by a 6-1 win by
Emilija Visic and
Skylar Minns over Gabriella Ioannou and Callah Preti at No. 3.
Alice Di Matteo and
Kanaha Furutani clinched the point soon after with another 6-1 win over Angela Vargas and Bailey Godwin at No. 2 before MSU's
Amelia Lawson and
Sydney Williams took down No. 7-ranked Ashley Penshorn and
Kyndall Quiroz, 6-2, at No. 1.
The Mustangs continued to gain momentum into singles play.
Visic pushed the MSU lead to 2-0 with a straight-set 6-4, 6-2 win over Ioannou at the No. 4 position, then Williams put the Mustangs on the brink of winning by closing out Stela Sifuentes 6-2, 6-4 at No. 6.
St. Mary's fifth-year senior Ashley Penshorn slowed down the Maroon tide at least for a moment as the No. 12-ranked player in NCAA Division II put the Rattlers on the board with a 6-4, 6-1 win over MSU's
Amelia Lawson at No. 1.
But MSU's
Skylar Minns survived a tight battle with Alessia Terlizzi for her sixth consecutive win to clinch the match at 7-5, 7-5.
MSU senior
Alice Di Matteo turned away a match point during the tiebreaker of the second second set to beat former Mustang
Kyndall Quiroz 2-6, 7-6 (8-6), 6-3 at No. 3, while St. Mary's senior Ashley Vargas outlasted
Hannah Yip 5-7, 6-2, 6-4 in the final match off of the courts.
St. Mary's dropped to 6-1 for the season, while going to 1-1 in league play.
Midwestern State returns to action Friday afternoon against Southwest Baptist. First serve at the MSU Tennis Center is set for 2 p.m.
