CYPRESS, Texas -- Midwestern State tied for 10th through opening two rounds of The Southern Invitational Monday at Cypresswood Country Club.

The Mustangs followed an opening round, 23-over 311 by firing an 18-over 306 to tie with Missouri-St. Louis.

"We got to see some of the best teams in the country up close," MSU coach Jeff Ray said. "We were coming off of a long break with not great weather, but every team can say the same thing. We had several players that struggled off of the tee. They stayed in defensive mode all day."

Freshman Tristan Gabbard overcame a rough start in the opening round finishing with a 4-over 76. The Fulshear native adjusted in the second round to fire 15 pars and a birdie to finish with a 1-over 73 to tie for 18th with a 36-hole total of 149.

"Tristan was solid again," Ray said. "She didn't putt particularly well or she would have been under par in the second round."

Sophomore Makenna Henry carded scores of 75 and 79 to tie for 40th with a 10-over total of 154, while Brecklyn Flanagan improved from an 80 in the first round to fire a 4-over 76 in the second place 47th with a 12-over 156.

Freshman Kodi Nolen is tied for 56th marking scores of 80 and 78 for a 14-over 158, while senior Beatrice Perucchini tied for 71st carding a pair of 83s for a 22-over 166.

Freshman Alli Reily fired a 3-over 75 on the strength of going 1-under on the Back Nine in the second round.  The Pottsboro native carded an 80 in the first round to finish tied for 43rd through 36 holes with an 11-over 155.

"Our inexperienced showed a little bit today. We need to improve our determination and focus to finish off rounds," Ray said. "It was a little disappointing, but we will see if we can bounce back and move ahead of a few teams tomorrow."

Dallas Baptist's Olivia Mitchell recorded a pair of 1-under 71s for a 2-under total of 142 to take a two stroke lead over teammates Jordan Karrh and Brandee Fleming as well as Lydia Sitorus of Rogers State.

The Patriots picked 13 strokes on the rest of the field with a 4-under 284 in the second round. DBU takes a four-stroke lead over West Texas A&M into the final round.

The third round of The Southern Invitational begins with a shotgun start Tuesday at 8:30 a.m.
