ALVA, Oklahoma -- Midwestern State's
Bakari LaStrap poured in a game-high 23 points and the Mustangs improved to 6-0 for the first time 12 years with a 95-78 win over Northwestern Oklahoma Saturday afternoon at Percefull Fieldhouse.
The Mustangs, who are off to their best start since the 2011-12 squad won 13 straight to begin the year, also claimed a victory in their first road game of the season.
LaStrap drew eight fouls while connecting on each of his 10 free throws on his way to his collegiate career high. He also connected on six of his 10 shots from the field with a 3-pointer and was one of four Mustangs in double figures.
The Mustangs started the game on a 13-2 run and led by as many as 21 points in in the opening half when LaStrap's driving layup pushed the MSU advantage to 48-27 just under three minutes before halftime.
But Northwestern Oklahoma State battled back in the second half behind a hot-shooting performance from Brian Free. The graduate senior transfer from Young Harris (Ga.) drilled seven triples to lead the Rangers with 21 points.
NWOSU clawed back to within five points at 76-71 on Free's sixth 3-pointer of the game with eight minutes to play.
But the Mustangs scored the next 12 points including 10-straight from the charity stripe to put the game away.
Senior guard
Pierre Sanders booked his fifth double-figure scoring performance of the campaign with 17 points while dishing out seven assists and grabbing five rebounds.
Sophomore guard
Mason Gibson connected on a pair of 3-pointers while going 6-of-6 from the charity stripe to finish with 16 points.
Junior forward
Will Shepherd, who hit three straight triples at one point in the second half, chipped in 12 points and eight rebounds.
The Mustangs, who came in as the 12th-best scoring team in NCAA Division II, tallied at least 90 points for the fifth straight game.
Midwestern State opens league play Thursday night against the only other remaining unbeaten team in the Lone Star Conference. The Mustangs and Dallas Baptist tipoff at 7:30 p.m. in D.L. Ligon Coliseum.
