SHAWNEE, Okla. -- Midwestern State travels hopefully, seeking its first win of the season. The Mustangs, who are in the midst of a four-game road trip, visit Oklahoma Baptist on Tuesday night. Tipoff from Noble Complex is scheduled for 7 p.m.
The Mustangs took a 34-16 lead in the second quarter at Southeastern Oklahoma on Saturday afternoon and led 36-25 at halftime. The Savage Storm dominated the second half, using a 22-0 run to outscore MSU in the third quarter, 30-5. Caitlin Kobiske had 26 points and 11 rebounds, while Holli Linley had 23 points and 10 rebounds in a 77-62 victory for Southeastern Oklahoma.
Kertisa Amos scored 19 points and grabbed seven rebounds for the Mustangs, and
Zarria Carter finished with 12 points and seven rebounds, as the Mustangs fell to 0-3 to start the season.
Amos is leading MSU with 19 points per game and is shooting 45.1 percent from the field. Amos and
Nikki Green both have eight steals through three games.
Zarria Carter is third in the nation and leading the LSC with 13.3 boards per game, and she is the second-leading scorer with 18.3 points per game. Amos is the second on the team with 6.7 rebounds per games.
Midwestern State is fourth in the Lone Star Conference with 40.67 rebounds per game and leads the league with 18.7 offensive rebounds per game.
The Mustangs are forcing 18.67 turnovers per game, which is seventh most in the LSC and has a +2.0 turnover margin.
MSU is leading the conference with 27 free-throw attempts per game, and the Mustangs are second in the LSC with 18 made free throws per game. However, MSU is 14th in the league with a 66.7 free-throw percentage.
Midwestern State is scoring 70.3 points per game, which is the fifth highest total in the LSC, but opponents have scored 87.3 points per game, which is 16th in the league.
Through the first three games of the season, Midwestern State is shooting 35.2 percent from the field and is averaging just 8.0 assists per game. MSU is 15th in assist/turnover ratio at 0.48, but the Mustangs are eighth in the league with 16.7 turnovers per game.
Oklahoma Baptist leads the all-time series, 4-2, and the Bison have won the last four meetings, including a 77-73 victory at D.L. Ligon Coliseum last season, when Erika Ankney scored seven points in a span of 33 seconds as Oklahoma Baptist took a 72-70 lead with 54 seconds remaining. The Mustangs held a 15-point lead with 7:45 remaining in the fourth quarter. Ankney scored 27 points on 5 of 12 shooting from the field and was 17 of 18 at the free-throw line for Oklahoma Baptist.
The last time the Mustangs were in Shawnee, the Bison jumped out to a 21-7 lead in the first quarter and scored 15 points off 12 turnovers en route to a 91-70 victory two years ago.
Oklahoma Baptist is 1-2 this season following a 78-45 win over Oklahoma City on Friday. Parker Stevenson scored 19 points in the victory. Sierra Copeland finished with 10 points and 11 rebounds for the Bison, who shot 42.5 percent from the field.
Jaedyn Getman, a sophomore forward, is the leading scorer for Oklahoma Baptist with 17.7 points per game, and she had a season-high 27 points in a 69-54 loss to Washburn on Nov. 11. Getman also leads the Bison with 7.0 rebounds per game.
Madison Chambers, who averages 10.0 points per game, leads Oklahoma Baptist with seven assists through three games.
The Bison, who are shooting 36.8 percent from the field, are averaging 60.7 points per game, while opponents are scoring 58.0 points per game and hitting 38.5 percent of their field goal attempts.
Oklahoma Baptist is averaging 37.3 rebounds per game and has a -4.7 rebounding margin. The Bison have only turned the ball over 14 times per game and average 18.7 points off turnovers, boasting a +6.0 turnover margin.
Midwestern State journeys to San Angelo for the Rambelles Classic over Thanksgiving weekend. The Mustangs will face Tampa on Friday at 3 p.m. and meet Missouri Southern at 3 p.m. on Saturday.
