Midwestern State tangles with sharp-shooting Chaparrals

WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- Midwestern State faces Lubbock Christian Thursday at 5:30 p.m. It's the second meeting this season as the Chaparrals visit D.L. Ligon Coliseum for the first time since Dec. 21, 2019. LCU won the initial encounter this year at Rip Griffin Center in Lubbock, 74-63, on New Year's Day.

LAST MEETING | Lubbock Christian extended its home court winning streak to 111 games by defeating Midwestern State, 74-63, on New Year's Day at Rip Griffin Center. Lubbock Christian scored the last nine points of the first half to take control of a tight game, and the Chaparrals led by as many as 14 points in the second half. Freshman Dyamon Griggs finished with 17 points and 13 rebounds for the Mustangs, who scored 15 second-chance points on 17 offensive rebounds. Jordan Mathis finished with 12 points on 4 of 6 shooting from the field and grabbed six rebounds. Lubbock Christian sophomore Grace Foster poured in 27 points and pulled down 14 rebounds for the Chaparrals, who had four players score in double figures.

LAST TIME OUT | Senior Markayla Johnson's long 2-pointer with 8 seconds remaining in regulation sent the game to overtime before Midwestern State outscored Oklahoma Christian to take 71-67 win Saturday afternoon at D.L. Ligon Coliseum. The Mustangs scored the final six points of the overtime period with Natalie Stice hitting a pair of layups in transition before Johnson connected on a pair of free throws with 12 seconds left to put the game away. Stice led the Mustangs with 13 points and five rebounds. It was her fifth consecutive game scoring at least 10 points. Sheridan Bostic scored in double figures for the fourth time this season. The senior guard scored 11 points on 3-of-7 shooting going 4-for-4 from the free throw line. MSU senior Mandy Withey scored seven points and pulled down a game-high 13 rebounds. It was her seventh game this season with 10-or-more boards.
