Mustangs look to bounce back Saturday at Eastern New Mexico

PORTALES, N.M. -- Midwestern State hits the road to face Eastern New Mexico in its Lone Star Conference opener Saturday night at Greyhound Stadium. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. (Central Time).

SERIES HISTORY | MSU leads, 20-7

LAST MEETING | Dillon Sterling-Cole's 10-yard touchdown strike to Kylan Harrison lifted No. 15 Midwestern State to a 31-24 win over Eastern New Mexico in overtime on Sept. 25, 2021 at Memorial Stadium. The Greyhounds rallied to score 21 points in the fourth quarter and connected on a 38-yard field goal by Cooper Hamilton to force overtime with two seconds remaining in regulation. Sterling-Cole passed for 298 yards and three touchdowns, while Harrison made five catches for 116 yards with two scores. 

LAST TIME OUT | Colorado State-Pueblo rolled up 576 yards of total offense on the way to a 59-27 win over Midwestern State Saturday night at Memorial Stadium. The Thunderwolves dealt the Mustangs their first loss in season opening home game since 1997. MSU junior Neiko Hollins passed for 236 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Mustangs, while sophomore receiver Jayden Moore made three catches for 108 yards and a touchdown. Senior linebacker Justin Guillory returned an interception 63 yards for a touchdown, while linebackers Quinterrius Hargrave and Nicolas Martinez led defensive efforts with eight tackles each.

THE DEAN OF THE LSC | Bill Maskill became the first six-time Lone Star Conference Coach of the Year while leading the Mustangs to their fifth league title. Maskill's 163 career coaching victories are the fourth most by active NCAA Division II head coach and ninth most amongst all active NCAA football coaches. His 150 wins as a head coach at a Lone Star Conference institution are the second most in league history. Ron Harms won 172 games at Texas A&M-Kingsville in 21 seasons from 1979-99.

MUSTANGS TRACKS |  Junior quarterback Neiko Hollins ranks third in the Lone Star Conference with 236 passing yards... Sophomore wide receiver Jayden Moore was one of three receivers in the league to record 100-yard receiving performances last week... Moore made three receptions for 108 yards including a 73-yard touchdown... Moore's 73 yard TD reception was the second longest of his career as he also had an 85-yard TD reception last season against Western New Mexico... Senior linebacker Justin Guillory's 63-yard interception return matched the ninth longest in program history and is the longest since Dylon Davis raced 70 yards with an interception return last season against Texas A&M-Commerce... Sophomore Ritse Vaes converted all three point-after attempts last week against Colorado State-Pueblo to extend his run to 17 straight... Vaes has been successful on 33-of-34 PAT attempts in his career with his lone miss being blocked against Texas A&M-Kingsville...

MAROON SEPTEMBER | Midwestern State owns a 61-11 mark in games played in September since the start of the Bill Maskill era in 2002. The Mustangs are 25-2 in September games since the start of the 2014 season with losses coming at Angelo State in 2019 and in last week's season opener against Colorado State-Pueblo.

SCOUTING THE GREYHOUNDS | North Texas transfer Kason Martin connected on 27-of-34 passes for 314 yards with three touchdowns to lead Eastern New Mexico to a season opening 34-18 win over New Mexico Highlands Saturday in Las Vegas... Junior receiver Asa Wondeh earned LSC Offensive Player of the Week honors after making seven receptions for 189 yards with two touchdowns (50, 39)... Junior running back Isaiah Tate ran for 94 yards on 20 carries with a touchdown...
