Gabbard fires fourth par-or-better round, Mustangs finish 11th at DBU Women's Classic

DENTON, Texas -- Midwestern State's Tristan Gabbard continued her impressive start to her collegiate career in the final round of the DBU Women's Classic Tuesday afternoon at the Wildhorse Golf Club.

The freshman from Fulshear once again finished strong by going 2-under over the last 11 holes of the tournament marking two birdies and recording nine pars to log her fourth par-or-better score in her six collegiate round with a 1-under 71.

Gabbard placed 24th in a top-heavy field shooting an even-par 72 in the opening round and a 75 in the second circuit to total a 2-over 218.

"She's already starting to make shooting around par and under par look easy," MSU coach Jeff Ray said. "That's the sign of a good player. She gives herself a lot of opportunities."

Senior Beatrice Perucchini locked down to string together 13 consecutive pars to card a 2-over 74 in the final round after carding scores of 71 and 74 on opening day to tie for 25th with a 54-hole, 3-over total of 219.

The duo helped the Mustangs record three solid team rounds as MSU logged scores of 287, 296 and 298 for a 17-over total of 881 to finish 11th against a field that included 15 teams in the GolfStat national rankings.

"You can't just have an average day against this type of field. It was a solid showing," Ray said. "I am proud of the girls and we're really young and will only get better. You leave here knowing that to do."

Sophomore Makenna Henry produced scores of 71, 74, and 77 for a 6-over total of 222 to tie for 36th, while freshman Alli Reily (74-73-77) tied for 47th with an 8-over total of 224.

Fellow frosh Kodi Nolen (73-78-76) tied for 62nd with an 11-over total of 227.

Henderson State (Ark.) (285-290-283) claimed the team title with a 6-under, 54-hole total of 858. The Reddies edged out Lynn (Fla.) (862/-2), Saint Leo (Fla.) (865/+1), and Dallas Baptist (865/+1).

Lynn (Fla.) fifth-year player Maria Hoyos won individual medalist honors firing scores of 68, 65, and 71 for a 12-under 204 to win by two strokes over Missouri-St. Louis senior Tove Brunell (70-67-69 206/-10).

Midwestern State competes next in the DBU Regional Preview on Oct. 3-4 at the Dallas Athletic Club.
