DENTON, Texas -- Midwestern State lacked one thing that every other team had in the 16-team field Monday in the DBU Women's Classic at Wildhorse Golf Club.
A GolfStat national ranking.
But the ranking won't be missing very much longer if the Mustangs continue to perform at the highest level the team has displayed over the opening five rounds of the season.
MSU cobbled team totals of 287 (-1) and 296 (+8) to finish tied for fifth through the first 36 holes trailing only No. 2 Lynn (570/-6), No. 13 Henderson State (575/-1), No. 16 Saint Leo (576/E), and No. 15 Tampa (582/+6).
"It's probably better than the national tournament field," MSU coach
Jeff Ray said. "It's a great field. We're competing at a high level. Our goal was to get back to where we were before COVID hit. I think we have turned it around with this group we have."
Sophomore
Makenna Henry carded four birdies on her way a collegiate low, 1-under 71 in the opening round, then followed up with a solid 74 to tie for 17th with a 2-over 145. The Sour Lake native added three birdies in the second round to close with a team-best seven.
"I am really proud of Makenna. She has qualified well and improved on her putting and wedges," Ray said.
Henry is tied with a senior teammate
Beatrice Perucchini, who logged six birdies on her way to duplicate rounds of 71 and 74 to tie for 17th, as well.
Freshman
Tristan Gabbard, the reigning LSC co-Golfer of the Week, recorded her third par-or-better score of her young career going for a 72 in the opening round. The Fulshear, Texas native added a 75 in the second round to tie for 31st with a 5-over 146.
Fellow frosh
Alli Reily marked a team-low 73 in the second round after carding a 2-over 74 in the opening round as she also finished tied for 31st.
Freshman
Kodi Nolen tied for 58th carding scores of 73 and 78 for a 7-over 151.
"We're getting production out of everyone. That's what is exciting to me about this. All are playing well and you never know who is going to come through," Ray said. "They aren't scared of anyone. I like their competitiveness. They feel like they deserve to be here and they do. Tomorrow is big. You have to have three good rounds at a tournament like this."
The final round of the DBU Women's Classic begins with a shotgun start Tuesday morning at 8:30.
