Gabbard makes history, wins collegiate debut at Swan Memorial

THORNTON, Colo. -- Tristan Gabbard made history by winning her collegiate debut at The Swan Memorial Tuesday afternoon at the Todd Creek Golf Club.

The Fulshear native became the first student-athlete in the 14-year history of the Midwestern State women's golf program to win her debut carding scores of 71, 77, and 70 on the way to a 2-over total of 218.

Gabbard displayed poise down the stretch going bogey-free over the final 11 holes carding birdies on two par-5s (Hole Nos. 8 and 14) and on the par-4, 370-yard ninth hole to finish off her second par-or-better round with a 2-under 70.

Gabbard became the third freshman in program history to win a tournament joining 2015 NCAA Division II national champion Brenna Moore and 2015 Lone Star Conference medalist Sierra Campbell. Moore and Campbell both claimed wins in their third collegiate tournament.

Fellow frosh Kodi Nolen also closed strong by reeling off 16 pars in the final round to finish with a 2-over 74. The Midlothian native tied for 10th with an 11-over total of 227 after carding scores of 79 and 74 in Monday's opening two rounds.

It is the first occasion that two MSU freshmen finished in the Top 10 in a debut at the same tournament.

As a team, the Mustangs delivered the lowest score of the third round with a 9-over 297 allowing MSU shave eight strokes off of the lead before settling for a runner-up finish in the season opening tournament.

Midwestern finished with a 43-over, 54-hole total of 907 to finish four strokes behind Colorado Christian.

Freshman Alli Reily tied for 19th in her collegiate opener carding scores of 82, 72, and 89 for a 16-over total of 232.

Senior Beatrice Perucchini delivered three team countable scores (79-78-77) on the way to tying for 24th with a 17-over total of 233.

Sophomore Brecklyn Flanagan notched two countable scores before finishing tied for 37th with scores of 80, 81, and 77 for a 22-over total of 238.
