DEARBORN, Michigan -- It was not an ending befitting of Midwestern State's incredible run through the 2021-22 season.
The Mustangs matched a program high winning four tournaments and claimed their fourth Lone Star Conference championship. MSU set a program record with a .851 team winning percentage while posting par-or-better team totals in 15 rounds this season.
The historic season culminated in Midwestern State's first trip to the NCAA Division II Championships where the Mustangs shook off tough conditions in the opening round to rocket eight spots up the team leaderboard into a tie for seventh by posting the lowest round of the field with a 2-over 290 at TPC Michigan in Tuesday's second round.
MSU looked solid through the opening nine holes of the final round of stroke play by going 4-over par on Wednesday, then it all fell apart.
The Mustangs' chances of claiming one of the eight medal match play berth were washed away on a cool, rainy Michigan day in the late spring. MSU suffered through a 30-over par showing over the last nine holes to finish 15th with a 54-over par team total of 918.
"Never in my wildest dreams did I even think we could play like that," MSU coach
Jeff Ray said. "No one saw this coming. We were really struggling at the four and five position. It was just one of those days."
The Mustangs turned in countable scores of 74 (+2) by
Jake Doggett, 79 (+7) by
Garrett Leek, 80 (+8) by
Jake Leatherwood, and an 89 (+17) by
Mason Mikeska in an inexplicable closing to the season.
"The entire year was great. It was just a really disappointing way to end the season. We hadn't played a round like this all year," Ray said. "A little time goes by, we will say it was a great year."
Doggett fought his way to a 5-over, 54-hole total of 221 logging scores of 75, 72 and 74 to tie for 11th.
The performance ends an amazing collegiate run for the senior from Hutto. This season alone, Doggett set school standards with a 70.25 season stroke average while claiming five wins. He reached No. 3 in the GolfStat national rankings while producing 27 par-or-better scores with 17 in the 60s.
Doggett put the program on the map with his selection to play in this summer's Arnold Palmer Cup in Geneva, Switzerland and was one of five finalists for the Jack Nicklaus Division II National Player of the Year.
Doggett won the Marie Morgan Awards as MSU's most outstanding male student-athlete in each of the last two years. He is a two-time LSC Player of the Year and won the league's individual championship in 2021.
He is a four-time GCAA/PING All-South Central Regional performer and four-time All-LSC selection.
Doggett is a second-team GCAA/PING All-America selection in 2020 and gained honorable mention in 2021. He is sure to be a first-teamer this season.
"Jake put his imprint on the program forever," Ray said. "A Jack Nicklaus selection and five wins this season. There is not much more to say about him. He has meant so much for our golf program. Jake will be missed both on and off the golf course."
Leek, who is also a four-time all-conference performer and former LSC Player of the Year in 2021, tied for 29th carding scores of 77, 70 and 79 for a 10-over total of 226.
The junior from Brock was a third-team GCAA/PING All-America selection in 2021 is primed to lead another strong MSU squad in 2022-23.
Junior
Jake Leatherwood tied for 36th firing scores of 78, 69 and 80 for an 11-over total of 227. The Snyder native is set to build off of this season's second-team All-LSC performance.
Senior
Keiton Hoster tied for 100th finishing with a 29-over total of 245 (76-79-90), while junior
Mason Mikeska placed 105th with a 39-over total of 255 (83-83-89).
Central Missouri won the stroke play portion of the NCAA Division II Championships with a 26-over total of 890.
The Mules are joined in the medal match play bracket by Colorado State-Pueblo (893/+29), Lee (Tenn.) (893/+29), Oklahoma Christian (894/+30), Missouri-St. Louis (895/+31), Barry (Fla.) (895/+31), Georgia Southwestern (896/+32), and Arkansas Tech (896/+32).
Missouri-St. Louis senior Joel Sylven (74-70-70 214/-2) claimed the NCAA Division II individual title by claiming the tiebreaker over Indianapolis senior Keegan Bronnenberg (73-69-72 214/-2).
