Mustangs finish 15th at Midwestern State Invitational

UT Permian Basin wins tournament at 2-under par

WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- No. 30-ranked Midwestern State shot 11-over 295 in the final round of the Midwestern State Invitational on Tuesday and finished in 15th place at 35-over 887 through the 54-hole event at Wichita Falls Country Club. 

UT Permian Basin won the tournament at 2-under 850 after shooting 5-over 289 in the final round. The Falcons, ranked No. 24 in the nation among NCAA Division II programs, finished six strokes better than the No. 2 NJCAA program, Odessa College. 

Will Tate of UTPB shot 10-under 203 through 54 holes to win the individual trophy, finishing four strokes better than Carson Wright of Cameron. Rory Gorman competing as an individual for the Aggies finished tied with Samuel Jenkins of Dallas Baptist in third place at 4-under. 

Seven individuals in the 101-player field posted red numbers, while four other players shot even par at the 6,884-yard course.

Nathan Nelson birdied the 18th hole to shoot even-par in the final round and had the best result of the tournament for the Mustangs. The sophomore from Gunter, Texas, finished in a six-way tie for 24th place at 4-over. Nelson also shot even-par in the second round on Monday.

Seth Bearden birdied the 340-yard, par-3 12th hole in each round and finished with seven birdies over 54 holes en route to a 7-over 220 and a seven-way tie for 35th place. Bearden had top-five finishes in his two previous starts at the Midwestern State Invitational.

Anniston McIlwain shot 3-over 74 in the final round and finished in a four-way tie for 74th on the individual leaderboard at 15-over.

Ryan Griff had nine birdies over 54 holes, including three in the final round, and finished in a six-way tie for 55th place after shooting 5-over 76 on Tuesday. Griff was 11-over 224 for the tournament.

Hank Germany shot 8-over 79 in the final round and finished in a three-way tie for 85th place at 18-over 231.

Bryce Hoech, Chase Kisver and Collin Moody were competing as individuals in Maroon & Gold this week. 

Hoech had three straight birdies on the front nine and shot 2-over 73 in the final round, The sophomore from Spring Branch, Texas, had six birdies over the final two rounds but finished the tournament 20-over after opening with an 11-over 82 on Monday.

Kisver aced the par-3, 170-yard fourth hole on Tuesday. It was his second eagle of the tournament. He shot 4-over 220 in the final round and was one of nine players to finish 8-over 221 in 42nd place. The junior from Flower Mound, Texas, had the best round for a Mustang this week with a 2-under 69 in the second round.

Moody birdied two of his final four holes to finish the final round at 5-over, and the freshman from Bridgeport, Texas, finished in a five-way tie for 88th place at 19-over 232.

Midwestern State travels to Goodyear, Arizona, for the Palm Valley Classic on April 6 and 7.
