EDMOND, Okla. – Seth Bearden,
Ryan Griff and
Nathan Nelson finished with three other players in a tie for 28th place at 12-over 152, and No. 23-ranked Midwestern State completed the truncated Oak Tree Invitational in eighth place at 41-over 612. The tournament was shortened to 36 holes due to frost at Oak Tree Country Club.
West Texas A&M lifted the trophy despite shooting 21-over 301 in the second round on Tuesday. The Buffaloes held the lead after the first round at 7-over par. WT won by four strokes over Lubbock Christian, which shot 13-over 293 on Tuesday. The Chaparrals were tied with MSU after Monday's round.
Midwestern State started the day in a third-place tie at 19-over 299, but the course took its toll on the team during Tuesday's round. The Mustangs shot 33-over 313 in the final round and dropped five places on the leaderboard.
Griff was the only player with two birdies during the second round, and he led the team with a 6-over 76. Griff birdied hole No. 1, a 411-yard, par-4, which was his final hole of the round. His first birdie was at the 12th hole but followed a bogey and proceeded a double-bogey. Griff had three birdies in the first round, including one at No. 12.
Bearden birdied the 562-yard, par-5 12th hole for the second straight day as well and finished the round at 8-over 78.
Nelson, who had four birdies on Monday and finished the opening round at 2-over 72, shot 10-over 80 in the second round. Nelson's only birdie on Tuesday came at the 433-yard, par-4 seventh hole.
The trio of Mustangs were joined on the leaderboard by three other golfers from the Lone Star Conference. Dylan Ford of Lubbock Christian, Lenni Perala of Oklahoma Christian, and Jackson Lankford, who was playing as an individual from West Texas A&M.
Juan Monckeberg finished atop the individual leaderboard at 1-over 141 and was one of three players to shoot an under-par round during the tournament. Monckeberg shot 1-under 69 on Tuesday and finished two strokes ahead of Hayden Bowman of Lubbock Christian, who shot even-par over the final 18 holes.
Anniston McIlwain finished in an eight-way tie for 52nd place at 16-over 156, and
Chase Kisver was alone in 66th place at 18-over 158.
As a team, the Mustangs shot 12-over on the par-5s, while six teams shot under par on those two holes — No. 4 and No. 12.
Midwestern State will tee it up at the friendly confines of Wichita Falls Country Club on Monday as it hosts the Midwestern State Invitational.
