Leatherwood, Mustangs fire low score in second round of NCAA Division II Championships

MSU charges up eight spots on the team leaderboard into a tie for seventh

DEARBORN, Michigan -- Midwestern State carded the low team score in the second round of the NCAA Division II Championships Tuesday with a 2-over 290 Tuesday afternoon at TPC Michigan.

Juniors Jake Leatherwood and Garrett Leek joined senior Jake Doggett with a par-or-better scores as the Mustangs improved seven spots and into a tie for seventh with Oklahoma Christian.

The top eight teams following Wednesday's third and final round of stroke play move on to medal match play to determine the national championship.

"We did what we wanted to do," MSU coach Jeff Ray said. "The guys feel pretty good. They know yesterday was kinda bad luck. They didn't seem too concerned about it."

Leatherwood equaled the low individual score of the day fiving a 3-under 69 to move into a tie for 11th place with a 3-over, 36-hole total of 147. His eagle on the par-4, 410-yard 16th hole punctuated MSU's highlight of the day as Doggett, Leek and Keiton Hoster also notched birdies on the hole.

"It was a great round by Jake Leatherwood," Ray said. "He was in control of his ball from tee to green."

Leek bogeyed the par-4, 411-yard Hole No. 2 before closing with 16 clean hole with three birdies to finish with 2-under to also tie for 11th with a with a 3-over, 36-hole total of 147.

Doggett fired four birdies and managed to fight his way to an even-par round of 72 despite taking on double bogies on the two long par-4s at Hole Nos. 14 and 18. The Hutto naive is also tied for 11th with a 3-over, 36-hole total of 147.

"Garrett was very good from tee-to-green today," Ray said. "Jake Doggett just had a little bad luck on the last hole."

Hoster logged his second straight team countable score with a 7-over 79 stepping in for the injured Ethen Wolf. He is tied for 67th with an 11-over 155 through two rounds.

"Keiton hunt in there and battled with everything he has," Ray said.

Junior Mason Mikeska logged a second consecutive 83 to land in a tie for 103rd with a 22-over total of 166.

Midwestern State is within six strokes of tournament leading Indianapolis, which fired a 14-over 302 in the second round after carding an even-par 288 in Monday's opening round.

The Greyhounds are trailed by Arkansas Tech (591/+15), Central Missouri (592/+16), Colorado State-Pueblo (592/+16), Barry (593/+17), Florida Southern (594/+18), MSU (596/+20) and Oklahoma Christian (596/+20).

UIndy's Keegan Bronnenberg (73-69) and Oliver Mast (69-73) are tied for the individual lead with Arkansas Tech's Holden Hamilton (72-70) with 2-under 142. Central Missouri's Nick Westrich, Oklahoma Christian's Mateo Pulcini and Lee's Connor Pollman are one stroke off of the pace.

Midwestern State draws a tee time of 11:10 a.m. (Central Time) for the final round of stroke play Wednesday at TPC Michigan.

Rain is forecast throughout the day in Dearborn as showers will evolve into a steady rain in the afternoon with a high temperature of 61 degrees.

"It will be a mental test as well as a physical test tomorrow," Ray said. "We just have to bounce back and get in the top eight and see what happens."
