Mustangs battle gusty winds, stand 15th through opening round at NCAA D2 Championships

DEARBORN, Mich. -- Calm winds steadily increased throughout the opening round of the NCAA Division II Championships Monday at course at Tournament Players Club (TPC) Michigan.

Midwestern State, which held the latest tee time in the opening round, felt the effects of  increasingly difficult course conditions as the Mustangs went 4-over on the Front Nine and 14-over par on the Back Nine.

"We couldn't get any luck," MSU coach Jeff Ray said. "It was just a bad draw. When the wind settled in two hours in, it was a really difficult golf course."

The Mustangs finished with an 18-over 306 to stand 15th through the first 18 holes.

The NCAA Division II Championships feature 54 holes of stroke play with the top eight teams advancing to medal match play.

Indianapolis (Ind.), who drew a 7:30 a.m. tee time, fired an even-par 288 followed by Barry (Fla.) (290/+2), Colorado State-Pueblo (295/+7), Oklahoma Christian (296/+8), Arkansas Tech (297/+9), Georgia Southwestern (298/+10), Florida Southern (299/+11), and Central Missouri (300/+12) to round out the first eight.

Lee (Tenn.), which came in ranked third in the latest GolfStat rankings, came in at ninth with a 13-over 301 to finish the highest of the three teams in MSU's three-team pairing, while Gannon (Pa.) stands 20th with a 40-over 328.

"If we had teed off around 7 o'clock, we might be leading," Ray said. "We battled but it was a different golf course. We are still in striking distance. We'll have to play well to get in contention. It was just bad luck. We're good enough to get back in it."

Senior Jake Doggett led the Mustangs firing a 4-over 75 to tie for 33rd. The Hutto native ranked amongst tournament leaders with four birdies, but was plagued by a stretch of five bogeys over a six-hole stretch from the 11th hole to the 16th hole.

"There was a storm delay when Jake got to No. 4 tee box," Ray said. "By the time he got Hole No. 6, it was blowing at 20 miles per hour, then it was consistently 25-30 the rest of the day after Hole No. 8."

Fellow senior Keiton Hoster stepped in for an injured Ethen Wolf and was 1-under par through his first 12 holes. The Weatherford native finished in a tie for 44th with a 4-over 76.

"Keiton played very well," Ray said. "I was proud of him to shoot 76 in this wind."

Junior Garrett Leek fired a 5-over 77 highlighted by an eagle on the par-5, 565-yard Hole No. 7. He added three birdies.

Junior Jake Leatherwood logged a 6-over 78 with two birdies, while junior Mason Mikeska fired an 11-over 83 to tie for 100th.

Indianapolis senior Oliver Mast fired a 3-under 69 to take a one-stroke lead over Barry's A.J. Ewart and Nicolas Quintero and Connor Pollman of Lee (Tenn.).

Midwestern State tees off the second round of the NCAA Division II Championships beginning at 9:15 a.m. (Central Time) at TPC Michigan.
