GOODYEAR, Arizona -- Jake Doggett wasn't about to let the moment get away in the final round of the Ruidoso Junior Golf Association's Palm Valley Classic on Tuesday afternoon.
Even with a bobble that resulted in a bogey which put the senior from Hutto back into a tie at the top of the leader board on his 17th hole of the day, Doggett wasn't going to let his school record fifth individual win of the season get away.
The lefty trusted his driver on the par-5, 545-yard hole which was the last of the day. Doggett laid up with his 6-iron then put a wedge shot to within 12-feet of the pin.
"It was a tough putt," Doggett said. "The pin was under a ridge and luckily I stayed under it. I matched the speed and the line and luckily it fell right in the middle."
His fifth birdie of the day finished off a 3-under 69. It was his 13th consecutive par-or-better performance as Doggett carded scores of 67 and 70 in the opening two rounds to finish with a 10-under 206. It was a stroke better than Western New Mexico's Joey Geary (71-67-69).
Doggett continued a storybook season with five individual wins in 10 tournaments. It was his seventh career win which is the second most in program history behind
Derek Oland, who had nine from 2012-15.
But Doggett was even more ecstatic about the Mustangs' team effort.
"We have a lot of good players and we're starting to put it together," he said. "We didn't play particularly well last week, but still found a way. It's real exciting to win like this before conference and regionals. We're kind of the hot team out there so it is pretty exciting."
Midwestern State dominated the tournament with a 20-under, 54-hole total of 844 producing single round tallies of 279 (-9), 282 (-6) and 283 (-5) to win by 12 strokes of Colorado State-Pueblo (856/-8).
"We were solid again as a team. It was good tournament for us showing our depth," MSU coach
Jeff Ray said. "It is a great golf course. We're really turning the corner. The kids are working hard and it is paying off."
The 54-hole team total matches the fourth lowest in program history and it is the second lowest to par. The Mustangs west 24-under at the 2009 Lone Star Conference Championship.
MSU accounted for its ninth, 10th and 11th par-or-better team totals of the season which also stand as the most in program history. The Mustangs also improved their team finish percentage to an astounding .905 through 10 tournament.
The third team win matches the second most in program history also achieved in 2012-13 and 2018-19. MSU won four times in 2014-15.
All five MSU golfers accounted for a par-or-better score, while four achieved the feat twice.
