GLEN ROSE, Texas -- It took 91 holes to determine the 2022 Lone Star Conference Champion.
And it was Midwestern State which scrambled back to force a 2-2-1 draw with West Texas A&M in the championship round of LSC Medal Match play Wednesday afternoon at the Squaw Valley Golf Course.
With two matches remaining, the Mustangs faced a 2-1 deficit and
Mason Mikeska trailed WT's Pablo Rebolleda by two strokes with two holes to play.
Mikeska took advantage of Rebolleda's double bogey on the par-4, 478-yard Hole No. 17 to pull within a stroke, but could have pulled even had his birdie putt within 5 feet not lipped out.
Mikeska maintained focus to deliver a birdie on the 18th hole, while Rebolleda managed a par to earn a tie and keep the Mustangs in it at 1-2-1
MSU's
Jake Doggett took a one-stroke lead over Eemeli Jarvinen into the final hole. Jarvinen's second ball sailed over the green. He left a chip from the nearby bar & grill short of the green, then three-putted for a seven.
Doggett landed his approach pin high, but it rolled down the slope of the green for a 15-yard putt. He left a lag putt for a virtual tap-in par to win by three strokes and tie the medal match at 2-2-1.
Midwestern State won on a team tiebreaker by a single stroke on Hole No. 17.
Garrett Leek pushed the Mustangs off to an exceptional start firing a 6-under 66 to win by six strokes over WT's Daniel Unger. The junior from Brock, who fired a 4-under 68 in the medal match win over Oklahoma Christian on Tuesday, went 35 consecutive holes without a bogey before taking one on his final hole against the Buffs.Â
The Mustangs won their fourth team championship also claiming titles in 2013, 2018 and 2019
Midwestern State earns the LSC's automatic bid to compete in its 12th consecutive NCAA Division II West/South Central Region Championship. The tournament is set for May 5-7 at the Pueblo (Colo.) Country Club.
